She was born in Wilkes County on September 7, 1928 to the late Zee Baker and Callie Sparks Baker. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Harless Smith; three brothers, Hugh Baker, Herley Baker, and Doyle Baker; three sisters, Lorene Woodring, Eveline Pope, and Durette Clark; a great granddaughter, Kara Brooke Chandler; and a daughter-in-law, Karen Day Smith.
Those left to cherish her memory include her three sons, Jerry Smith and wife Dale, Dennis Smith and wife Reba, and Jeff Smith and wife Tricia, all of Hudson; four grandchildren, Alicia Chandler, Greg Smith, Chris Smith, and Jeremy Smith; six great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Lillian Baker and Christine Baker; numerous nieces and nephews and a large church family.
Madeline was a Christian, a Mom, and Grandma, and to some “Grandma Madeline”. She worked for Bernhardt Industries and the Old Blue Bell Company as a seamstress. Madeline was faithful to her church, West Lenoir Baptist, where she sang in the choir and took care of the babies in the nursery for years. She was a world traveler which included going to the Holy Land numerous times, Egypt, Canada, and China, and has visited all fifty states. Of all the places she visited, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina was her favorite.
Madeline was most proud of that her family was a five generation family. She will be truly missed by her family and church friends.
A funeral service to honor the life of Madeline will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at West Lenoir Baptist Church with Rev. Rick Safriet officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., prior to the service. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Lenoir.
