Lois Chandler Helton, age 87, of Collettsville Road, Lenoir, died Saturday, June 22 peacefully at home. She was born November 30, 1936 in Caldwell County to the late Charles Edward Chandler and Mattie Estes Chandler. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Jerry Fred Helton and her siblings, R.C. Chandler and Louise Annas.
Mrs. Helton worked for the Caldwell County School System as a teacher assistant and bus driver for 43 years. She was the treasurer of the Collettsville Ruritan Club for 30 years and served as a director on the West Caldwell Health Council since its beginning in 1977. She received the “Order of the Long Leaf Pine” award from Governor Hunt for her many years of service with Caldwell Friends. In 2020, she received the “Ruritan Forever” award, the highest honor bestowed upon a Ruritan member.
Survivors include her son Gregory Fred Helton and Crystal of Lenoir, NC and her daughter Angela Helton Heinze and Mark of Holly Springs, NC, two sisters Lavelle Helton and Linda King, her four grandchildren Ashley Helton, Ross Helton and wife Kelly, Alyssa Pienkosz and husband Bret, and Jonathan Heinze, and two great grandchildren Marleigh Day and Nash Cornette, and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Pendry’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 25 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
A funeral service to honor Mrs. Helton will be held on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at 10:00 am in the chapel of Pendry's Lenoir Funeral Home with Rev. Zyndall Greene officiating. The service will be followed by a private in committal service at Mulberry Baptist Church Cemetery.
