Mr. David L. Propst worked in Caldwell County at the Lenoir Drug Store, Hendrick Café and Morrison Café for approximately 4 years and Attended St. Paul AME Church. He decided to make a career change and moved to Detroit, Michigan in 1951 and worked at LA Young Spring and Wire Company, Stars Wrecking Company and Bruce Excavation. He enlisted in the U.S Army and served in Germany from 1953 until 1955 where he was a Korean Conflict Era Veteran. He later moved to Flint, Michigan where he and his late wife of 50 years, Delia Norwood Propst lived. During this time, he was employed by the State of Michigan School System.-MSD.
He was an active member of the Holbrook Avenue Church of God, sang in the choir, served on the board of trustees and as treasurer for many years before he retired and returned to North Carolina in 2003.He attended Dulatown Presbyterian Church. He was a natural when it came to writing poetry. During Black History Month in February of 2019, the church celebrated him as “Poet Laureate”. Mr. Propst stayed active and mentally charged, working on landscaping, maintenance, traveling, finding things to build or create from his imagination and if it fell apart, “Oh well, No problem, Get the duct tape”. He even made a wraparound birdhouse from a tree trunk; he had a keen sense of vision and detail. He remained active, traveling and doing the things he loved until his health declined, yet always kept a bubbly spirit, never complained, soft spoken and loved by all who met him. One day he said he was tired and that he was ok, even to those who cared for him, he never grumbled or complained. He often said, “I own nothing, It’s only a Loan”.
He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Evelyn Norton-Propst, two sisters, Geneva Propst, Mary Frances Propst, both of Philadelphia, PA, daughters-in-law, Marlene Propst of Flint, MI and Jeanette Norwood of Lenoir, NC Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives, friends and church family. Also a special friend, Ms. JS.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2020 at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends for an hour and a half prior to the service, from 12:00 pm until 1:30 pm at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home.
