Paul Riddle

Paul Bernard Riddle, 85, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at his home in Odenville. Mr. Riddle was born in Odenville and was a lifelong resident. He graduated from St. Clair County High School in 1956 and attended The University of Alabama for two years. He continued to follow Alabama sports for the entirety of his life, and held season tickets for many years for football, basketball, baseball, and softball games.

Mr. Riddle served his country from 1963 to 1965, being stationed in Korea for most of his time in the United States Army. He worked a short time for Hayes Aircraft in Birmingham before being named Postmaster of the Odenville Post Office in 1967. As Postmaster, he went above and beyond in his service, oftentimes helping patrons pay bills, fill out forms, and even kept a check on blood pressures for the members of the community. He retired from the Postal Service in 1996. Mr. Riddle’s many community services included being a founding member of the St. Clair County Rescue Squad, a volunteer fireman, a Scout Master, a member of the Odenville Library Board, and serving with DHR. He was also a founding organizer and volunteer with the Fortson Museum in Odenville. Mr. Riddle was an avid fisherman, building his own wooden boats with his friends and family and assembling his own fishing rods. He also contributed much time to St. Clair County High School’s athletic department as both a student and as an adult. Mr. Riddle was manager for many teams and ran the scoreboard and clock for football and basketball for many years.

He is preceded in death by his father, Verd Riddle; his mother, Mary Lou Moore Riddle; and his sister, Peggy Riddle Reed.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years Brenda Ash Riddle; his son, Brett Riddle; his daughter Kim Riddle Layton (Dennis); his granddaughter, Allison Layton (Tyler Vaughn); his great-granddaughter Blake Vaughn, and many other friends and family.

Services for Mr. Riddle will be Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at 11:00 AM graveside at Branchville Cemetery in Odenville, Alabama.
