John was born in Sokolovac, Croatia April 15, 1925 immigrating to Canada with his mother and sister in 1930. They made their way to a homestead near Warburg to join his father and start their new life in Canada. The hard work of homesteading in the difficult times of the 1930’s instilled a drive to succeed that served John well throughout his life. In 1952 John married Veronica Sitter and they lived near Warburg where John ran a successful heavy construction business and farming operation for over 40 years. John was responsible for many acres of farmland being cleared and put into production in the Warburg-Breton area and beyond.
In 1998 John and Veronica retired to Leduc where they resided until John’s illness made it necessary to move to Edmonton. Many afternoons were spent with friends playing cards and John would often trade stories with his friends about the one that got away while they were ice fishing on Pigeon Lake. John was a self-taught master carpenter creating many frames, cabinets and pieces of furniture for family and friends.
