I literally bumped into John Daka four years ago in an aisle at Redner’s Food Market in Campbelltown. He was wearing his Coast Guard ball cap as usual, so I said “Semper Paratus.” That was John’s invitation: Are you a Coastie? Where were you stationed? When I said my first cutter was the icebreaker Westwind; “So was mine,” he said. Arctic? Yes, two summers, Me Too…and so forth. We met for coffee and talked more about our favorite kind of pizza—thin crust, and Italian subs—his with hot peppers; mine with sweet. So we formed a pizza club to try different pizza shops throughout the County. Then Covid hit and we were restricted to summer or places that had outside tables. We tried just about every pizza shop in Palmyra, Annville, Cleona, and a few in Lebanon. Then we moved on to Italian subs. We both had health issues, but his were much more serious than mine. When I could give him a ride to the VA or Hershey Med Center, no problem.  I was just glad to return a favor for all the years he was a good Samaritan. In between our luncheons, we communicated by phone, text, and e mail.  Both of us cook, so we would talk food. When I saw a program on moving a lighthouse on Martha’s Vineyard, I notified him.  I will miss John, but feel fortunate to have had the pleasure of knowing him these past four years. Bravo Zulu, my good friend on a life well lived.

I worked with John for about 5 years back in the '70's, at the Social Security office in Bristol, Pa.   We remained friends and kept in touch thereafter (usually by email or cards), and would occasionally get together with some of the other Bristol "old-timers".
 I love the picture of John included with his obituary.  It shows that ever present smile and twinkle in his eye, which brought sunshine into the lives of so many friends and family members.  He had a wonderful personality, always upbeat and encouraging, and a great sense of humor.  He will be truly missed.  My sincere condolences to Randy and to all of John's relatives, whom he loved dearly.

In the hearts of our nation, no one holds more honor and respect than a  deceased service member. Our nation and our military are eternally grateful to them . John may your soul be forever in the palm  of GOD

John was a true friend from our years at Lowell School and Olney High School. John , Jackie Cronin Oxenford and myself have remained close friends over all these years. John was a true gentleman and kind person..John grew up on Seventh Street in Olney and friends with my husband Ron. His Sister Mary and her sons 
lived later on Fairhill Street with Ron and I.  John will be greatly missed and his passing is a real shock, we were in touch over the summer..  Rest in Peace my Dear Friend..Jean and Ron Pleis..
