Katie was born on July 26, 1934 in Liberty Hill, TX to W.M. and Evie Floyd Hays. The family moved to Austin after World War II. After graduating from S.F. Austin High School, Katie married Don Glass and they raised one son, Marty. She became a dedicated room mother and summer teaching assistant in the Headstart program at Mathews Elementary. Later, she joined the Texas Department of Transportation as an executive secretary. She served TXDOT for 29 years until her eventual retirement.
Throughout her life, Katie was, fiesty, proud and fiercely loyal and loving to her family. That familial loyalty was only rivaled by her dedication to Texas A&M football, as a 12th Man for 50 years. She was a long-time season ticket holder at Kyle Field and never missed an opportunity to yell for her Fightin' Texas Aggies. Katie was an avid traveler throughout the U.S. In later years, she traveled around the state of Texas to support her grandkids at many high school and college band events. Katie was a fan of bluegrass music and you could find her in the front row of every Colorado River Boys performance, supporting her son on the banjo and grandson on the bass.
Katie was preceded in death by her father W.M., her mother Evie, her first husband Donald E. Glass, and her second husband Fred K. Ruthven. She is survived by her son Marty, her two grandchildren Jennifer and Travis, her sister Betty, her great-grandchildren Grayson, Evelyn, August, and Everett, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
