Dick was born to Granville and Lois Hastings on March 26, 1944 in Abilene, TX. He graduated from Sweeny High School in 1962. Dick played basketball all four years of high school coached by his Dad, Coach “Steak” Hastings. He earned a basketball scholarship to the University of Houston under Guy V. Lewis. Due to a torn ligament in his knee, Dick was forced to retire from playing basketball but continued his education by earning a Bachelor’s Degree at Lamar University in Beaumont, TX and a Master’s Degree at Prairie View A&M.
Dick went on to teach and coach basketball in Galena Park where he met a precious custodian by the name of Juanita Machu. Mrs. Machu insisted that he meet her beautiful daughter, Jeanette, and her intuitions were right - Dick and Jeanette were engaged 5 weeks later and married after 5 months on April 19, 1969 at Peace Lutheran Church in Galena Park, TX.
Dick then coached basketball at French High School in Beaumont, TX and up until the day he died he could still tell you some of his favorite games – play by play. Dick became a counselor at New Caney High School and an Assistant Principal and Principal at several schools including Sugarland Willow Ridge, Westwood High School and Liberty Hill Middle School. His most treasured memories were from his time at Westwood and Liberty Hill where he met some of his best friends, teachers and coaches.
In 1996, Dick began his retirement with his best friend, Jeanette, and enjoyed fishing in Cuchara, CO; watching the horse races in Ruidoso, NM; taking numerous cruises; pulling the slots at the casinos in Louisiana and the Golden Pig at Kickapoo; playing golf and working on his “ranch”; and watching his grandkids at every sporting event he could attend. He was always thrilled when the grandkids would listen to him talk about basketball and loved teaching them the correct form of shooting the ball.
Dick will continue his legacy through his wife of 54 years, Jeanette Hastings; his daughter, Kim and husband Dane Seward; his son, Richard Hastings; his grandchildren: Trenton, Trey, Haley, Cole and Ava. Dick also leaves behind his brother, Gary Hastings and his sister, Molly Summa.
A Memorial Service will be held at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral home in Leander, TX on May 19th at 2pm.
