Corey Alan Johnson passed away in the home he shared with his oldest daughter, son-in-law, and grandson in Austin, Texas, on Monday, November 21st. Corey was born into this life on May 24, 1963 in a small American town called New Castle, in Indiana, on the Big Blue River. Not long after, his older brother (living), Wayne Johnson and the boys’ parents, Reverend Charles I Johnson and Shirley Kinney Johnson (both living), moved to Marion, Indiana, home of the birthplace of James Dean and where the boys played with trains, GI Joe, were both Boy Scouts and both swam on the Marion Giants High School swim team. Corey, always the competitive one in any room, went on to be a State Champion before graduating and attending Purdue University in Electrical Engineering.
Always the natural salesman, Corey convinced his parents of adopting: baby ducks, rabbits, guinea pigs, and finally, the family dog, Augie Doggie, their long-haired dachshund. It was Corey’s incredible humor and charm, that let others feel comfortable in his presence and these qualities also gave him a prolific career in sales. Starting as a mortuary salesman in Chicago to the VP of Sales for The Strauman Group in Austin, Texas, Corey’s personality and business acumen won him sales as he advocated for his sales teams always with supportive energy and a sense of humor. Always volunteering his time and energy to helping others live a better life, Corey’s innate capacity to support and help was contagious.
Corey leaves behind three amazing adult children and a one year-old grandson. Natalie, a marketing professional and the oldest, is married to her best friend, Nick Wells, and they have a beautiful baby boy (one year old), named River. They moved Corey into their home in Austin six months ago and the family was able to support one another through Corey’s struggle with multiple myeloma. River got to play with his grandpa every day in his first year of life. Soph resides in Los Angeles, works in marketing and continues to live a creative life. Raleigh, 21, lives in Austin with his four-legged best friend, Loki, and writes code for a large firm in the southwest. Corey’s sister (living) resides in Bend, Oregon, where Corey loved to visit and enjoy the many outdoor options it provides. Always an avid adventurer, Corey was willing to try most anything once and could make any moment, however droll, brighter and way more fun. He will forever be missed by his family and friends.
