Susan Joy Gibbs

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Susan Joy Gibbs, a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend. At the age of 76 and a Las Vegas native, she passed away on December 12, 2024 at Valley Hospital after a year-long battle with congestive heart failure and kidney disease.

She was born on March 12, 1948 in Las Vegas, Nevada to Robert and June Worthen and is the second oldest of four siblings. She went to John S Park and Bishop Gorman High School. College was short-lived and after her first year at St Mary’s Girls School in Omaha, she returned to Las Vegas where she met her first husband, David Dice Barber. They had three beautiful daughters and resided mostly in Tucson, AZ. They divorced, and a few years later while back in Las Vegas, she married Thomas McRae (now deceased) and enjoyed life while camping, traveling, and raising the three girls, giving them a wonderful childhood. After 20 years of marriage and after the kids had grown, the two divorced. As a fabulous and 50 year old, she met James Gibbs, and together they celebrated 24 wonderful years together, traveling the world, golfing, spending holidays with family, and loving the grandchildren.

Sue was a waitress at Ellis Island for over 30 years where she gathered life-long friends that she has kept in touch with over the years. She was an avid UNLV Rebel fan and season ticket holder, loved to travel across the country in the RV and cruising around the world, spending her time with her husband and family. Mostly, she excelled at sharing delicious traditional family recipes during our many holidays spent together.

She is survived by her husband James Gibbs, three daughters, Kiplyn Sweikert (Darren), Kimberly Yeazel, and Kellinee Barber, two stepdaughters, Traci Hardy (Nate) and Dawn Hershenhaus (Steve), her four grandchildren, Dylan and Rylie Sweikert, Jordyn and Abby Yeazel, three siblings, Karen Engle (Bill), Rocky Best (TJ), and Robert Worthen Jr. (Debbie) and several nieces and nephews (Regan, Tiffany, Amberlee, Brandee, Robby, Jessica, and Britnee). Her family resides mostly in Las Vegas and in Colorado.
