Steven J. Horn

Steven Jonathan Horn was a natural leader whose winning presence allowed him to take control of various situations with ease. Equipped with a clear and calculating focus, he possessed a tough-minded, “take charge” attitude. He had the ability to make even routine situations seem exciting, and he was at ease with the role of playing problem solver. Steven always sought out the scene of where the action was. Sociable, analytical and pleasant, Steven was an individual who enjoyed life’s challenges.

His parents were Sidney and Johnette Horn. Steven was raised in Los Angeles, California. Always able to express himself well, Steven possessed strong interpersonal skills. He was optimistic in his outlook on life and was able at all times to be open and direct in his communication. Armed with a great wit, Steven was raised to be accepting of others and to implement a strong personal work ethic.

Blessed with a balanced attitude, Steven was able to relate well with others. His occasional role as family mediator gave him the opportunity to ease tense situations when they occurred. For example, whenever Steven got into trouble, he would always say to his mother, "You said if I ever told the truth and shame the devil, I would not be disciplined." Steven had 5 brothers, Marshal, Cornell, David, Adrian, and Terrence; and two sisters Stephanie and Talvar. Steven had a strong desire to be treated fairly and would readily offer others the same fairness in return.

As a young child, Steven showed his creative ability in many ways. He was outgoing and animated. Steven enjoyed new activities and pursued a variety of interests. He took part in football and baseball. He made his family proud, especially, his mother when he brought home his trophies.

Known to others as a focused, logical, open-minded and somewhat driven individual, Steven was able to utilize these qualities to succeed in high school. His curious nature was spurred by his ability to maximize his personal learning style through employing a hands-on approach. He was good with facts and had an excellent memory. He enjoyed some courses more than others. His favorite class in high school was English. The teacher he enjoyed learning from the most was Ms. Barnes.

Steven had a marriage prior to Mary, and a daughter named Bridney. Steven met Mary at David Starr Jordan High School in 1985, and they had instantly became friends. They had not dated in high school, but several years later they had gotten closer. Steven had proposed to Mary by taking her to the beach, getting down on one knee, and then asked her to be his wife.

Steven and Mary were married May 24, 2008 in Carson, California. The wedding was absolutely spiritual and beautiful. Elders James and Rebecca Choice officiated the ceremony. The bridesmaids were, Arlene, Loretta, Stephanie, DeJeanee, Jasmine, and my only daughter, Sha'tiya, and the groomsmen were David, Adrian, Terrence, Davale, and Myles. the wedding reception was held at Glory International church, Inc. which was full of lots of laughter. Their honeymoon was a trip to Las Vegas.

Steven was attentive to Mary's feelings, and he charmed Mary and others with his gift for being able to give freely and generously. A good listener with an engaging personality, Steven was able to bring pleasure and unexpected humor to the relationship.

Very much like a kid himself, Steven identified with the inquisitive and creative side of his children’s personalities. He was able to direct his energy and spontaneity towards helping his children acquire added common sense skills. Steven was blessed with four children, Bridney, Jonathan, Sah'tiya, Joshua.

Later in his life, he decided to attend college. Again, his direct, “down to earth” approach served him well. He was able to absorb complex concepts and had an acute sense of how things worked. He attended Los Angeles Southwest College and earned a Certified Nursing Certificate in 2009. He also became a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.

Steven was a flexible worker who was able to draw the best from others around him. A persuasive individual who was quick to make necessary decisions, Steven’s strengths included being able to think on his feet. He could be a leader who sought impact for his decisions. Gifted with an incredible ability to read body language, Steven was able to positively manipulate situations and motivate others in order to get a task completed. He was a good negotiator who enjoyed new challenges. Steven could multi-task, and he was endowed with entrepreneurial spirit, allowing him to think beyond standard norms when it came to resolving issues in his work environment. His primary occupation was working as a nurse. He was employed for Sunrise Hospital as a certified nursing assistant.

Steven enjoyed his leisure time by watching the sunset, listening to music and playing video games. He was content to enjoy his hobbies alone but was also willing to share his interests with others.

Steven was something of a sports fan and enjoyed watching his favorite events whenever he got the opportunity. Top on his list was the San Diego Chargers Football team.

Steven held close traditional values and as a result, faith was important to him. He was a member the Pentecostal Faith. During that time, he participated in the men's meetings, drama ministry.

Travel and vacations were experiences that Steven truly enjoyed. He preferred to seek out excitement wherever he went and he was partial to vacations that were casual and laid back with an atmosphere of “live and let live.” He was willing to leave his plans open and flexible, just in case something more interesting came along. Favorite vacations included anywhere there was a beach to watch the waves, pick up sea shells and relax while listening to poetry.

He is survived by his wife Mary, children Bridney Horn, Sha'tiya Clinton, Jonathan and Joshua Horn; his parents, Sidney and Johnette Horn; his siblings Cornell, Daivd, Adrianne, Terrence, Stephanie, and Talva; and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Services were held at Palm Mortuary, 1600 South Jones Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89146. Steven was laid to rest at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California.

Steven was the kind of person who could win others over easily. A concrete communicator, he relied on his senses to increase his involvement and awareness of others. He was always able to provide amusing repartee to his friends and acquaintances, offering a seemingly endless supply of quips, anecdotes, jokes and stories. If Steven had a theme song written about him, it might well have been “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” He enjoyed his life and the experience of living it. This is how everyone will remember Steven Jonathan Horn.
