He was born on July 30, 1941, in Baltimore, MD., one of five children. After graduating from Catonsville High School in 1959, he went into the United States Air Force and became an aircraft mechanic. Upon getting out of the Air Force, he met his wife, Elizabeth Ann Erdmann and they were married on December 1, 1963.
In 1964, he was hired by the Clark County Fire Dept. Local #1908. In 1971, he left the Fire Dept. moved to Huntington Beach, CA and went to work for Sparkletts Drinking Water Corporation as a salesman and supervisor. In 1975, he returned to the Clark County Fire Dept. and during this time he advanced to Firefighter Engineer and given the honor Employee of the Month in July, 1995. After 25 years of service, he retired from the Fire Dept. in Sept. 1997.
Richard loved sports cars, loved to cook, he even cooked chili for President Clinton, loved gardening, especially growing roses and had 50 rose bushes, traveling to Dana Point, CA, and spending time with his family.
Richard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Hurley, his son, Jeff M. Hurley, his grandson, Jeffery P. Hurley, his granddaughter-in-law, Ashleigh Roberts, his great-grandson, Liam Patrick Hurley, his sister, Linda Moore of West Virginia, his half-brothers Michael Watts and Jeff Watts of Baltimore, MD, and his half-brother Stephen Watts of Jacksonville, FL, and his nieces and nephews.
We would like to thank Dr. Paul Herren, Dr. Art Shehane, Dr. Homayon Iraninezhad, Dr. Edward Victoria, Dr. Rowena Achin, Eun Sung, Nurse Practitioner, Mountain View Emergency Room Staff, Bright Star, (Life Care) Evercare, Nathan Adelson Hospice, and Las Vegas Fire Department Station 42, for the wonderful care they gave my husband during his illness.
