Philip Engel

Philip Engel (“Papa Phil”) was born on October 16, 1927 in Long Beach, New York, and died peacefully at home on February 3, 2022, at the age of 94. Papa Phil was the “Gonsa-captain” (Big Boss) of his world – the sun in which so many of us orbited around.

He graduated from Long Beach High School with the honor of salutatorian at the age of 16, attended the University of Illinois, the University of California Dental School, and finished his education at UCLA with a BA in accounting. He interrupted his college education to serve in the US Army on the Army Hospital Ship Mercy in Japan and Germany at the end of WWII. He started working as a certified public account in 1950 and was an active CPA all of his life.

Phil was a generous giver and volunteered for many charitable organizations. He was treasurer of the Las Vegas Junior Chamber of Commerce, was involved in the Optimist Service Organization for eight years, and was with Jewish Federation of Las Vegas for 28 years and the President for two years.

Phil moved to Las Vegas in 1953 and lived there for 69 years, contributing in many ways to enhance his community. He was married for 65 years to the love of his life, Adele Weinstein Engel, who survives him. He treasured his family more than anything and was so proud of each of his three children and their spouses, his six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his best friend and brother, Jerry Engel, and many loving nieces and nephews. “Papa Phil” lived a life full of humor, energy and joy. He had a story or a joke for every occasion. He was passionate about his family, mathematics, puzzles, and was an avid movie buff and world traveler. He was not only the Patriarch of the Engel clan, but for many other people. He effortlessly fulfilled so many roles for so many people. He will be forever in our hearts.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30AM on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at King David Memorial Chapel, 2697 E. Eldorado Lane, Las Vegas, NV. For friends and family unable to attend Phil’s service, but wishing to view the service online, please go to the “Join Livestream” link below.
