Ninnetti Groce (aka) Nannetta Johnson was born August 9, 1944 at St. Catherine’s Hospital in East Chicago, Indiana. She was soon adopted and warmly welcomed into the home of Belle and Felix Johnson of Gary, Indiana. Nan had a happy childhood and enjoyed participating in many community events in her neighborhood.
Nan accepted Jesus Christ at the age of four. As a youth she became an active member of First Baptist Church. She was a natural leader and easily took on leadership roles in the areas of Sunday School, Baptist Training Union and as a youth usher. Her peers recognized her skills and ease of communication and often requested her to represent them at church wide local and regional conferences.
Nan attended Gary Roosevelt High School and was a member of the class of ’62. Nan was a cheerleader and was involved in multiple school clubs. After graduation she attended Indiana University at the Gary campus.
She was one of the first female mail carriers in the city of Chicago, Illinois. Later she worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Chicago, Illinois as well as in Gary, Indiana. Continuing in her career, Nan was also employed at the Gary Mental Health Center.
Nan relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada in December, l985. She began her career with the Las Vegas Justice Court in Clark County, Nevada where she held numerous positions for a period spanning 23 years – retiring in 2010 in the role of Intake Service Specialist.
Nan had a variety of interests and joys. Most of all she loved being with friends and family, whether that involved celebrating holidays, playing Bingo, experiencing musical concerts together, enjoying a restaurant outing, or just sharing good conversation. She “never met a stranger” and enjoyed all people.
She was preceded in death by her son, Quincy Lewis, and her parents. She leaves to mourn, her cousins Marjean (David) McPherson of Atlanta, GA, Eugene Fain of Atlanta, GA, and Oscar McClure, Jr. of Las Vegas, NV and a host of relatives and wonderful friends.
