Mary Alice Butler

Mary Alice Butler was born October 22, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan. She was the youngest of three children born to the late Severna James and Ethel Juliet (Hickman) James. Mary Alice received her diploma from Detroit Public Schools.

On August 8, 1960, Mary Alice married the love of her life, Gibson Butler. They shared a love for God, worship, travel and time with good friends and family. They enjoyed serving and worshiping with several Seventh-day Adventist church families, including London in Maybee, Michigan, Mt. Dora in Mt. Dora Florida, Berean in South Bend, Indiana, and Calvin Center in Cassopolis, Michigan. Mary Alice also visited Abundant Life during her time in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mary Alice began her career working for the federal government in 1943. During her tenure, she was often recognized for her excellence at work, including being the recipient of the Sanford Bates Award for outstanding service to the Bureau of Prisons. After 39 years of dedicated service, she retired from the Federal Corrections Institution in Milan, Michigan in 1982. At the time of her retirement, she was a Medical Records Technician and also an Equal Employment Opportunity Counselor.

Gibson and her siblings, Severna James, Jr. (brother) and Betty Winn (sister) proceeded her in death. Mary Alice leaves to cherish her memory a sister-in-law, Hattie Brown, four nieces, Cheryl Bow (Arden), Stacia Hall (Lionel), Felicia Fields (George), Karen Durant (James) and one nephew Terrence Brown. She also leaves beloved cousins, great nieces and nephews, her church family and a host of dear friends.
