Juan Jose Vasquez

He moved to Tijuana, Baja California in 1946 at the age of 5-years old. In 1959, he moved to Los Angeles, California at the age of 18. Shortly after in 1962 he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to work for the Vasquez Landscaping Company.

He proposed to his wife in Tijuana and would commute between all three cities until marrying Estela Olga Armenta in 1963. They had their honeymoon in Las Vegas, Nevada and ended up staying in Las Vegas to start their lives there. He started working for the City of Las Vegas Housing Authority where he started as a maintenance man. His hard work and dedication to his family motivated him to move up within the department over the years to director of maintenance & development for the housing authority. He retired at the age of 50 from the housing authority but continued to be self-employed. Anyone that knew him knew his biggest addiction was to always be working. Throughout the years because of his willingness to help others, he was well loved by many people in the community.

He had five children with his wife…Aide, Norma, Alma, Laura, and Juan Jose Jr.

Living in the same community since 1965, he became a parishioner of St. Christopher Catholic Church and would volunteer regularly in all the church events. Juan Jose being from Jalisco had a passion for horse and ranch-style life. He started the very first lienzo charro (Mexican rodeo arena) in Las Vegas along with his brother Manuel Vasquez. They named their lienzo ‘El Herradero’.

His daughter Alma preceded him in death.

He leaves behind 18 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 2 on the way.
