Several years ago I contacted John to let him know that I was working on a book of poetry and that I planned to dedicate the book to his brother, Chuck.   It took longer than I thought but on May 15, 2023 I finally completed the above book dedicating it to my dear friend, Chuck.  It was with great sadness that I came across John's obituary.  My sincere condolences to all his family.

   This book is dedicated in memory of Charles P. Dombroski.

In 1990 I met John at Chuck's memorial service.  John was wearing some of Chuck's clothing and he and Chuck were so similar that it made an impression that has stayed with me all these years.  Chuck was a very dear friend.

RETURNING OF THE LIGHT

In late winter the lengthening light entices a sweet 
flood of sap to rise in the trees like a long, slow orgasm.
The warming earth stretches, 
yawns as tree roots grow hair.
Rocks tumble from old stone walls.
The trees dream of bursting leaf buds
and long days of reaching for the sky.

Your death in February was expected 
but uninvited and not welcome. 
Later that year on the shore of Lac Du Fou,
your brother scattered your ashes on the water.
It startled a swimming flock of wild ducks 
who burst into the air, splashing, quacking
and then flying through the cloud your ashes made.

Duck wings drumming the uneven air
their multivocal lament faded off into the light brightness.
The flock rose higher and higher over the open water.
They finally cleared the treetops on the far shore,
their feathered wings reaching for the sky.

On behalf of Newport (NH) High School's Class of 1971, I wish to extend our deepest sympathy to John Dombroski's family and friends on his recent passing.  The twinkle in his eye, his magnetic smile, his fun-loving personality and his love for cool cars come to mind as remembrances of John in high school.  He enjoyed time with his many friends and we are thankful for the memories that will remain with us.  Rest in Peace, John.

John graduated in my Newport High School Class of 1971.
I will always remember his laugh, his smile and his zest for life.
Rest in peace John.
