Janet/ Mom was simple, happy, comfortable, smart, strong, and amazing. She was funny, witty, and observant. She could be hot and cold in only the way that a mom could be- always with her children’s best interest in mind. She didn’t keep a lot of friends. Her mission in life was to make sure that her children grew up smart, safe, educated, healthy, and happy and she spent a lot of her time on that. She did an amazing job, the best ! Janet Marie Martin, 72, California passed away in a Valley Hospital room, in Las Vegas, NV, surrounded by loved ones on August 14, 2024.
She was born in California in 1952 to John and Marcella Martin (both preceded her in death), who loved her very much. She grew up in a Catholic household including her private schooling. Janet (mom) was one of 5 children (4 brothers) so she learned many life lessons early on including how to struggle and survive. She started working at a young age at A &W Root Beer in the Sacramento, CA, area. This is where she met her future husband (Bruce Lyle Crook). She and Bruce married in 1971 and had 2 children (Douglas Crook “me” in 1973 and Steven Crook 1974). She divorced a few years later and then became a mom & dad. She excelled at both roles and never looked back.
Janet loved her children and her children’s successes. She lived vicariously through both of her children’s education paths, degrees, careers, and daily lives. Janet was a constant communicator and was always available. Janet and her kids traded using “yo yo yo” to address each other back and forth on voicemails, messages, texts, and emails until finally Janet became named as “yo yo yo” and then eventually just “yo”. She liked that name.
Janet loved being a grandmother “Grammy”. She was always interested in every story that involved one of her 3 grandchildren (Parker, Zoey, and Madison). Cautious not to be overbearing, she would never push any issue or opinion too hard but she did offer great (seemed to always be correct) advice. Janet was kind to animals. Over the years she had too many cats and dogs: Fleabag/ Jimmy, Divver Lee, Belle, GiGi, and Chyna to name a few. She treated her animals like princes and princesses and was even known to give them lengthy massages and hand feed them home cooked meals with a fork. We could not have asked for a better Mom, Grammy, Yo, friend, life-coach, or confidant. We will love her forever and miss her until the end of time. We love you Yo!! We miss you Yo!!
