Gloria Evelyn Wiener was a modest woman, quiet and observant in her ways. She was trustworthy and traditional in her approach to her life and in her relationships. She was tough-minded with the kind of “stick to it” attitude that earned the respect of all who knew her. She was also a woman who was meticulous, carefully disciplined, and orderly in virtually everything she undertook. Realistic about life, she was always at the ready, prepared to take on responsibility.
She was the daughter of Fredrick and Elsie Swanson. Gloria grew up in Bronx, New York, just blocks from Yankee Stadium and where the famed Polo Grounds stood.
As a young girl, Gloria had a number of interests. Like most children, she enjoyed playing and making up games. She was curious about the world around her and was often eager to explore it. Gloria was an active child who took part in ice skating and horse back riding. In her spare time she liked to read, knit and play cards. However, to Gloria, the most fun to be had was simply playing and spending time with her friends.
A typical teenager, Gloria had a fairly happy high school experience, making that critical transition from adolescence to adulthood. She enjoyed some classes more than others, having favorite subjects and teachers.
Always considered a “good” friend to those she knew, Gloria enjoyed a broad group of acquaintances and several very close friends during her lifetime. Some of those closest to her were Dolly and Stan Swirz, Loretta and Willian Filbert, Eunice & Dick Carras, Dora and Dom Monzolla, Jerry & Joe Hollub. After moving to Las Vegas, Nevada, where Gloria and her husband Tony were enjoying their retirement, Gloria, became friends with Cora Williams, Rachel, Barbara Blue, Sharon Williams, Jan German and neighbors Al and Jan.
On Sept. 29, 1951 Gloria exchanged wedding vows with Anthony William Wiener at city hall, Bronx, NY. They renewed their vows 12 years later at Holy Rosary Church, Hawthorn, New York. Empathic and loyal, Gloria was committed to making her new family happy.
Gloria worked hard to be a good mother to her children and she did her best to fulfill their needs. Gloria was blessed with two children, Craig and Roger. Another blessing for Gloria was the gift of two grandchildren, Thomas and Christopher.
Fortunately, Gloria enjoyed what she did for a living. Showing a strong work ethic, Gloria worked diligently and did her best to succeed in her career. Her primary occupation was Accounts Payable Clerk. She was employed for 15 years at Gereral Foods. Gloria always sought to be a team player, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done.
Gloria enjoyed her leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. Her favorite pursuits were bowling, playing cards and swimming. She was content to enjoy her favorite pastimes alone but was also willing to share her interests with others.
Gloria found pleasure in sports. Recreational sports included bowling and swimming. Gloria was also something of a sports fan and enjoyed following her favorite teams, the NY Mets and NY Giants. On Sundays during football season, meals were planned according to the Giants gametine.
Gloria’s faith was important to her. She was a member of St. Eugene's for 30 years in Yonkers New York.
Gloria enjoyed traveling and time away on vacations. It was a chance for her to renew and relax, to visit new places and experience new things. Favorite vacations included frequent trips to upstate New York frequenting such places as Lake George, Saratoga, and Montecello. Gloria and her husband Tony were big horse race fans, Saratoga & Montecello being two of their favorite places. Their were also frequent trips to Las Vegas, visiting relatives in California, and family trips to Florida. A memorable trip was their cross country adventure with Dolly and Stan Swirz, where they visited Yosemite National Park, Bryce Canyon, the Grand Canyon, Yellow Stone National Park and time in Las Vegas gambling.
Gloria was a lover of animals and cherished her pets. One of her favorites was her first dog, Yankee. She didn't have enough money for the dog, so the shop owner challenged her to sing Yankee Doodle Dandee....hense the name of the dog, Yankee. Later on in life came her second dog Spotty , an adorable cat named Sam and third dog Fairfield.
When Gloria’s retirement finally arrived in 1989, she was well prepared. Her new life involved relocating to Las Vegas, Nevada to start their second life. During her retirement years, she found new pleasure in traveling, bowling, playing cards, gambling, coffee every morning with Jan, Cora, Rachel and Barbara, also played pool volleyball and went to shows on the strip, including 2 New Years Eve events. Even in retirement, Gloria continued to stay in touch with her old friends back east while making plenty of new acquaintances. Gloria was active in her new community and felt fulfilled with the opportunities retirement offered her.
Gloria passed away on December 4, 2010 at Nathan Adelson Hospice, Las Vegas, Nevada. She is survived by her sons, Craig and Roger Wiener, grandsons, Thomas and Christopher, and daughter in law, Susan Wiener. Services were held at Palm Mortuary - Cheyenne, Las Vegas, Nevada. Gloria was laid to rest in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City, Nevada.
Simply stated, Gloria was a good and kind person, an individual who will for all time be remembered by her family and friends as being a caring and giving person, someone who was a vital part of their lives. Gloria leaves behind her a legacy of life-long friendships and many cherished memories. Everyone whose life she touched will always remember Gloria Evelyn Wiener.
