Elwood George Lodle (96), one of the original residents of Sun City, Las Vegas, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2016. Born on Nov. 11, 1919 to George and Ethel Lodle in Ashland, Wis., the oldest of 6 children. Graduating the College of Emporia in 1940, he was a high school teacher and coach before being called into service for WWII. He began duty crossing Africa and then made landings in Italy and France. He lived for 3 months in a foxhole on the Anzio beachhead before troops fought their way to Rome and then into Germany. Lodle received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and French Croix de Guerre. Later, as a career Army officer, he served our nation as a military advisor to Chiang Kai-shek's Taiwan army; served in Berlin, Germany before the Wall went up; and in Korea. He was married to Elizabeth Harbaugh who preceded him in death after 63 years of marriage. He is survived by son, Steve (Florida) and daughter LuAnne (Tennessee, husband Carter Crocker); sister Novella Merry and brother George Lodle (Kansas); and granddaughters Lynnae, Marika, Carly, and Claire. Service at Palm Mortuary September 23, 2016 at 11 a.m. followed by a 1:20 p.m. burial at Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City.
