Ed was a successful executive at Unisys for over 30yrs. As a young mathematician he found his niche in Computer Programming as a Computer Software Specialist for his company, which enabled him to travel extensively. This gave his wife and children the unique experience of living abroad & traveling to many countries. He prided himself in being the one who could solve critical issues that arose in his company worldwide, he wanted his family to be well educated and to experience diverse cultures. To him it was important for his children to succeed in school and professionally.
As a child, Ed's mother nicknamed him “Skip” which some family members still call him. He was born on June 1st, 1939, during WWII, when all the men were away at war. So he was raised by the women of his household, mainly his mother and grandmother. They had a victory garden and some farm animals. As a young teenager he worked with his Mom on fishing boats where he prepared fish for customers. Later, he worked for his step dad at the San Fernando Pet Hospital, helping with surgeries and caring for the recovering animals. In High School he excelled in mathematics, played chess, and competed as a gymnast on parallel bars. After a time at university , he went into the army and was stationed in Germany for two years, during the Berlin Airlift under Kennedy. Later he went back to university. He landed a computer programming job there in the space physics dept., and continued pursuing his lifelong career in computer programming.
Ed met his wife Mary as the little sister of his childhood friend and chess buddy when he was a teenager. After he came back from the army, they fell in love, got married and had their four children. Then soon afterward, family in tow, they moved to Europe and lived abroad many years. Ed and Mary were married for 52 years.
Ed enjoyed hosting parties, sharing his love for gourmet food, fine wine, and collected classical & diverse music. Ed Tuomy is survived by his wife Mary, their four children, ten grandchildren, and the extended Tuomy & Goettl families.
