Danny and the youngest Marcel.
Loving Grandfather and Great Grandfather.
Born in London England in 1933
Father was Edward Wartenberg born in Poland 1890 and mother Alice Wartenberg ( whose maiden name was Alice Brinks ) born in London in 1899. Alice’s father ( David’s grandfather ) was Mark Brinks born approximately in 1865 in Riga Latvia
who once told his grandson David the the Jews had to walk on opposite sides of the street because of the violent anti-Semitic behavior the “goyim” had against the Jews most of it promoted for centuries by the church. The families from both Poland and Latvia moved to London to escape the pograms against the Jews and ongoing anti-semitism.
David his sister Anita and his brother Willy were evacuees during World War 2 and were evacuated to Wales and Northern England to avoid the heavy bombing that London took.
David and his brother Willy stayed together and his sister Anita lived with another family during the war. The house they lived in in London had been bombed. They were separated from their parents for several years until the end of the war.
In 1945 the Red Cross came to David’s parents home and told them that 16 family members had been gassed in the concentration camp in Poland.
David was 12 years old at the end of WW2. He collected American comic books and stamps. He had American pen-pals that he wrote and exchanged letters with who sent him comic books and stamps that he collected and started to sell and had his own business to make money to help out his parents.
During the Korean War his brother Willy joined the Royal Air Force and as David turned 18 in 1951 he was a Zionist and decided to immigrate to Israel. He lived, worked and guarded
the Kibbutz against Arab Terrorists. David also connected with a cousin of his from Poland who was lucky enough to survive the war but couldn’t return to Poland because of the continued anti-Semitism of the Jews even after the war by the general Polish population. They made comments to his cousin “your the ones Hitler missed.”
In 1952 after one year of living in Israel David returned to England.
Shortly after David’s return to England he decided to travel to the United States a country he always admired and loved. So he boarded and stow away on a ship headed to the U.S.A.
He first Landed in New York and spent the summer months in New York. He mentioned that in those days he used to go to the United Nations and attend and listen to actual meetings that were taking place between different countries. In the winter time he went to Miami where he could enjoy the warm weather and beautiful life style.
In 1958 he met his future wife Maxine and after they got married they had 3 sons Garry, Danny and Marcel the youngest. When the children were in elementary school David decided to move to Los Angeles and eventually to Las Vegas.
Family always came first for David, he was a great provider and loved his family. He was in the wallpaper and paint business in the “shmata”business (in English means rag business or clothing) and eventually got into the window covering business. David managed his own books and did his own accounting.
He was motivated, focused, driven extremely outgoing, went the “extra mile” and did what it took to get the job done. He was very independent thinking and cherished his freedom.
He was still driving and shopping by himself past the age of 90!
David had wisdom beyond his age, highly intelligent and self educated, he could remember facts, numbers, names and historical situations with great detail from decades ago. He had spoken very little Hebrew since he was in Israel yet 70 years later he could still understand and speak the language. David was an optimist and had once said to Garry that nothing is beyond your reach that the sky is the limit. Anything you put your mind to you can achieve. He was very strong minded, was very resourceful, creative and had a vision to be able look and predict future developments.
The whole family is very hurt saddened and heart broken with his passing. It’s a total loss to all of us who knew him. There will never be anyone like David. May his life, legacy and his wisdom be passed on to and guide future generations.
A funeral service for David will be held Friday, September 29, 2023 from 8:00AM to 9:00 AM at King David Cemetery, 2697 E Eldorado Ln, Las Vegas, NV 89120. Following the funeral service will be a graveside service from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Palm Eastern Cemetery.
