Carl Warren Baker Jr.

Carl Warren Baker, Jr., of Las Vegas, Nevada, after a long illness, passed away peacefully at his home on November 13, 2017 at the age of 87. Warren was cared for and survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Florence Baker; his two daughters Cindy Marilyn Slad (and husband Thomas Slad) of Berwyn, Illinois; Dr. Cheryl Ann Baker (and husband Dr. Evan Ashkin) of Durham, North Carolina; four grandchildren Kristin Rago (Slad) (and husband Christopher Rago), Brian Slad, Elise Ashkin-Baker and Amelia Ashkin-Baker. His brother-in-law Don Miller (and wife Sue Miller), niece Colleen Miller, great niece Marissa Sturgis (and husband Brian Sturgis) and his cousin Bill Mayes (and wife Marian Mayes). Warren is preceded in death by his parents and cousin Hardy H. Baker. Warren was born in South Gate, California on March 26th, 1930 to Genevieve and Carl Warren Baker. Warren met Florence Miller while attending High school, but it wasn’t until a few years later, while both attending USC, that they began their courtship. Warren and Florence were married on September 1st, 1953 in Huntington Park, California. They celebrated their 64th anniversary on September 1, 2017. Warren began his Navy career by enlisting into the ROTC program while attending the University of Southern California. He graduated from USC in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. After graduation, he served in the Korean War aboard the USS Floyd B. Parks from 1953-1955. Warren took enormous pride in his military service and eventually rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserves, where he served for more than 15 years in California. Warren started his professional career in Los Angeles at ITE Corporation and continued his education by receiving a post-graduate degree in Personnel Management. He then worked as a Human Relations consultant in San Francisco for Hay Group. Warren and his family moved to Chicago, Illinois, for him to pursue a career as Vice President of Human Relations for National Can Corporation. In 1977, he and Florence moved to San Diego to be closer to Warren’s father. In 1991 Warren agreed to move to Las Vegas to support Florence’s career advancement in real-estate management, where he lived until his death. Warren was an avid golfer, bridge and backgammon player and enjoyed playing squash in his youth. He had a sharp mind and unending intellectual curiosity, often witnessed by his extensive knowledge of history and geography. He was adventurous and loved to travel and planned many memorable vacations for his family when his daughters were young. Those vacations include, but not limited to outings to Florence’s brother Don’s cabin in Big Bear California, camping on the West Coast from California to Oregon to Washington, visiting all the major Hawaiian Islands, horseback riding at a dude ranch in Arizona and several 4th of July adventures to Ensenada, Mexico to celebrate the holiday with fireworks. As Warren’s health declined a few years ago, Florence reached out to the Veterans Administration for healthcare assistance. That’s when Jesse Reese, also an army veteran, came into their lives. The family wishes to express tremendous gratitude to Jesse, whom for 3 years was a compassionate home caregiver and companion to Warren. The family would also like to thank Dr Lisa Rosenberg and her palliative care team at Southwest Medical Hospice in Nevada. The visitation will be held at Palm Northwest Mortuary (6701 North Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89131) on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 1:00 pm, with funeral services following at 2:00 pm.
