Alonzo Eugene Miller, Sr., 64 a resident of Las Vegas since 2000, passed away on April 26, 2016, at Centennial Hills Hospital after a sudden illness. He was born February 10, 1952 in Carmel, California to Rex Norman Miller and Allene Elizabeth (Sexton) Miller. He found his soul mate and partner in San Jose, California and at the age of 26, he married Gwendolyn George Fleming. Alonzo served his country in the United States Air Force from September 1970 through 1979, including two tours of duty in Viet Nam and rescue escort for Presidents Nixon and Ford. Following his Honorable Discharge he joined the Astrophysics Department at NASA Ames Research Center at Moffet Field in Mountain View, California. He assisted in the development of heating tiles for the Columbia Space Shuttle and on prototypes for the Hubbell Telescope. Due to program funding cutbacks, he transferred to the U.S. Postal Service were he quickly worked his way up the management. He became Acting Postmaster in Reno and retired in Las Vegas in 2007. After retirement Alonzo became a volunteer with Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (MVP) working with city detectives and at the McCarran airport. In addition he became a Commander in the Royal Rangers, a Christian organization that mentors and trains boys from kindergarten through high school, in values that our country was built upon. He received a rarely given “Sword of Valor” in July, 2012, for his commitment, dedication and leadership to the Royal Rangers and has been recognized as a certified national trainer for the organization. Alonzo was a sports fan, golfer, dedicated father and friend. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, his children, several grandchildren, relatives, and countless friends. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting you consider donating to the Alonzo E. Miller, Sr. Scholarship Fund to support boys in the mentoring program, to attend camp with the Royal Rangers. Celebration services will be held at 10:00 a.m., May 12, 2016 at Palm Northwest Mortuary.
