Charles Lee Hillegass (Charlie) of St. Petersburg passed away on October 1, 2021 at the age of 82. Born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, he was predeceased by his loving wife Joan, step-son Carl Reese Eaby IV, parents Delbert and Bertha Hillegass, sister Nellie Mae Hillegass, and brothers Louis, Harry and Clarence Hillegass. He is survived by his step-children Jacqueline (Timothy) Dixon and Jeffrey (Diana) Eaby, grandson Ian Dixon, step-daughter-in-law Cheryl Eaby, sister Helen McMillan, brother Delbert (Muriel) Hillegass, along with sisters-in-law Mary Lou Hillegass and Janet Donnelly. “Uncle Charlie” was blessed with numerous nieces and nephews who fondly remember bowls of ice cream, waterskiing and even hiding in the station wagon to go to the drive-in movie.
Charlie had such pride being the first in his family to graduate high school. After this accomplishment, he went on to have a successful career in printing working the night shift his entire career.
Charlie was a fantastic dancer and swept his soon-to-be wife Joan off her feet at a ballroom dancing event in Gulfport, Florida. Charlie and Joan were married in December 1980 in a Hawaiian-themed wedding. They shared 40 wonderful years together enjoying dancing and family trips, especially to Hawaii and the Bahamas.
He loved to joke (including many episodes with his missing big toe), listen to music, and watch old movies. He was an avid gardener and recycler. If he was not hitting up yard sales at 6 am, he would take anyone around his wonderful yard to “tour what I found at the flea market”. Charlie loved his Tampa Bay Rays and Bucs with an occasional cheer for old favorites like Washington Football and long-gone Senators when they played in DC. He was a gentle soul and will be greatly missed.
A visitation for Charles will be held Sunday, October 10, 2021 from 12:00 - 1:00 pm at Serenity Funeral Home, 13401 Indian Rocks Road, Largo, FL 33774. Charles' funeral service will succeed, beginning at 1pm. Charles will then be laid to rest at Serenity Gardens Memorial Park, 13401 Indian Rocks Road, Largo, FL, at 2pm, with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Charles' memory may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, https://www.michaeljfox.org/donate.
