Larry was born to Laurence Sklapsky and Lora (Kribs) Sklapsky on November 13, 1944 in Lansing, Mi. He graduated from Everett High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University. He worked for the State of Michigan in the Department of Mental Health until his retirement in 2006.
Larry enjoyed his many dogs, tennis at the Michigan Athletic Club and traveling with his wife, Fran. Together they traveled to countries around the globe, planning a trip to Peru and the Amazon before his health put that out of reach. Among his favorite places was the Caribbean Island of St Lucia where he enjoyed a break from the Michigan winter for 25 years. He fondly referred to it as his little piece of paradise.
While traveling was important to him, his greatest joy was found in those times when he was surrounded by the whole family. He planned summer lobster fests, importing the lobsters from Maine, as a special treat when they could all get to Michigan. Opportunities for trips with the family were prized as time and distance made it more difficult to coordinate everyone’s schedule. A 2017 trip to Hawaii with the family to celebrate his and Fran’s 50th anniversary was particularly memorable.
Larry is survived by his wife of 56 years, Fran, his sons Martin, Matthew (Molly), and daughter-in-law, Melissa (Mericle) Sklapsky, grandchildren Joshua, Collin, Joseph, Domanik and Eli, great grandchildren Dominick and Cassidy, his brothers Alan (Connie) and David, his aunt Lee Mead, brothers-in-law Jim (Sharie) and John (Colleen) Day, sister-in-law Jeanne (Scott) Day-Labo, many nieces and nephews, and his canine companion, Dusty.
Larry was predeceased by his parents and stepmother Dorothy Sklapsky, his son Brian, and his brother William.
His family would like to thank the University of Michigan- Sparrow Health Hospice Care for helping him transition in the most comfortable and peaceful way.
As requested by Larry there will be no visitation or funeral services. A celebration of his life will be planned for this summer. If anyone wishes to make a donation in his memory, the Capital Area Humane Society at 7095 W Grand River Ave, Lansing, MI 48906 would be his choice.
