Eleanor Mary Schmitt from Lansing, Michigan, age 83, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2020. She was born on August 4, 1937, to Mike and Anna Schomogyi in Muskegon, MI. Eleanor graduated from Muskegon Catholic Central High School in 1955. She had a heart of gold and took great joy in taking care of others. Eleanor loved others unconditionally and was an inspiration to all who knew her. She persevered with unfailing grace and triumphed over many serious health issues over the past 27 years, therefore, she was nicknamed “The Wonder Woman” by many. Eleanor enjoyed spending time with and shopping for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing Bunco with her friends. Many years ago, Eleanor completed the 350 mile Dal-Mac Bike Ride from Lansing to Mackinaw City. She loved traveling to visit her family and friends. Eleanor worked at Consumers Energy for 15 years. She spent 23 years working out and developing friendships at Sparrow Hospital Cardiac Rehab. On September 6, 1958, Eleanor married her hall-locker and homeroom friend, Eugene Schmitt at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Muskegon Heights and celebrated 61 happy and blessed years together. Eleanor was active at St. Therese Catholic Church in Lansing, as she assisted in preparing funeral dinners, serving at the church food pantry, and being a mass greeter. Eleanor is survived by her children Brian (Krisanne) Schmitt, Sheri (Jerry) Tuesburg, and Karen (Brian) Grass, 9 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren; sister Theresa (Roy) Farrell, brother Michael (Dawn) Schomogyi, sister-in-laws Evelyn (Joe) Horvath, Patricia (Frank) Schomogyi, Margaret Houseman, Cecilia Kerr, brother-in-law Jerry (Sue) Schmitt, as well as many other nieces, nephews, and special friends. Eleanor is proceeded in death by her parents Mike and Anna Schomogyi, brother Joseph Horvath, brother Frank Schomogyi; in laws Anna and Jacob Schmitt; sister-in-laws Katherine (Bud) Scofield, Madaline Schmitt, Martha (Bob) Beauleaux, and Joyce (Jim) Muston; brother-in-laws Jake Schmitt, Charles (Theresa) Schmitt, and John Houseman. Visitation will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9, at Tiffany Funeral Home, 3232 W. Saginaw Street, Lansing, MI. On Thursday, September 10, at 11:00 a.m., a funeral mass will be held at St. Therese Catholic Church, 102 W. Randolph Street, Lansing, MI, with Father John Fain presiding. A viewing will held one hour prior to the mass at the church. Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers, while her great-grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers. Internment will take place at Chapel Hills Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 4444 W. Grand River Avenue, Lansing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the St. Vincent Food Pantry at St. Therese Catholic Church, St. Therese Catholic Church, and the American Heart Association. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later time in Muskegon, MI.
