He was a graduate of Lansing St. Mary High School and lived his entire life in the Lansing area. He retired from General Motors after 30 years, and was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kaye (in 2015); and an infant daughter, Sally Anne. He is survived by his son, Michael D. (Monica) Kahl; 2 grandchildren, Makenzie and Camden Kahl; and 4 brothers, Phil Kahl, William Kahl, Jeff Kahl, and Gary Kahl.
In his younger years, Doug had a passion for drag racing and became the 1965 season point title holder and earned the right to compete in the NHRA world finals in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He went on to win the 1965 NHRA Junior Stock World Championship. Then, in 1966 he won the "C" Stock Automatic title at the NHRA Springnationals in Bristol, Tennessee.
After retiring from drag racing, he focused on his new passions of raising a family and golf. Doug's golfing spanned the next half century, where his skillset earned him two holes in one. He spent over 20 years working as a starter at Forest Akers, Michigan State University.
After the passing of his wife Kaye, Doug enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, his friends from both the drag racing and golf circles, his fellow classmates from St. Mary's, and his counterparts from his days working at General Motors.
This year, Doug will be able to celebrate his and Kaye's wedding anniversary (December 20), reunited, in the presence of their Lord and Savior.
