Born August 9, 1938 in Sodus, NY, the son of the late Charles C. and Madelyn (Postman) Flanders, passed away July 3, 2013 at the age of 74. Doc grew up on the family farm in New York and went on to proudly serve his country as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy retiring after 21 years of service. He was a highly decorated veteran serving two tours in Vietnam on four different ships; USS Harold J Ellison DD864, USS Plymouth Rock LSP29, USS Richard L Page FFG5 and USS VIREO MSC 205. While in the Navy he was an accomplished diver and has a huge seashell collection. He travelled all over the world and made many friends He retired from the Michigan Department of Corrections after 15 years of service as a Corrections Officer in the Jackson facility. Doc was a fanatic about fishing going as far as keeping track of all the fish he ever caught. Beyond fishing he loved people, Barbara Streisand music, bowling, and stopping at yard sales and was an avid reader. Doc could fix anything and often would drop whatever he was doing to help others. He also enjoyed the many family vacations in Petoskey. Doc will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Preceded in death by his parents. Surviving to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Sherry; children, Jennifer Flanders, James (Mary) Flanders and Benjamin Flanders all of Lansing; sisters, Margaret Capana of Florida, and Patricia VanDerwal of New York; several grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and last but not least his two special companions, Candy and Sam his beloved dachshunds. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 13th at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 12th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral Home.
