Vernon Glenn Redden was born on March 25, 1938 at Macrorie, SK to James Worthington Redden and Hilda Watson Redden. After a courageous battle with cancer, he passed away at the age of 83 on June 30, 2021 in White Rock, BC. Through the last month of his life, he was tenderly cared for by his eldest daughters, LouAnn and Lucinda.
As the youngest of six children, Vern grew up on the family farm in Saskatchewan. They were a busy family, involved in grain production and livestock, providing their local community with milk from their dairy cattle. Vern grew into a man of many talents and experiences. His first career was in the trucking industry with his brother Harold. He went on to establish Redden Construction, a heavy equipment road building company. His many projects took him throughout the prairies and into northern Manitoba.
In 1967, he married Louise Fredeen. Several years later, they decided to transition from construction to full-time farming near Macrorie. For many years, Vern poured his dedication and expertise into the round-the-clock demands of their farm. By 1995, he and Louise set out on a new chapter of life in the Lower Mainland of BC. In their early years there, Vern drew on the skills acquired earlier in his life and worked in construction management.
As he moved towards retirement, he turned to his long-time interest in cars, and became one of the Lower Mainland’s most beloved (and impeccably dressed) Mazda salesmen, building lasting relationships with his clients. Even in the ever-growing, busy city of Langley, he was recognized and loved everywhere he went. He finally retired in his 81st year after a lifetime of hard work.
Vern’s family was his greatest source of joy. Just the mention of his children and grandchildren would bring out his signature beaming smile. There was nothing more precious to his family than a traditional afternoon snack and visit with Papa. He had a lifelong love of music and reading. His family could depend on his solid answers to any question, and his ability to capably handle any repair or project he encountered. Vern is remembered by all as the kindest of gentlemen. He never spoke a harsh word. His family thrived on his unconditional love and encouragement. He has left behind a legacy of kindness and integrity.
Vern was predeceased by his parents and sister Shirley. He is mourned by his wife Louise, his son Terry (Evelyn) of Lynden, WA; his daughters LouAnn (Wayne) of Calgary, AB; Lucinda (Gary) of Langley, BC; and Charissa (Joe) of Colville, WA, along with his grandchildren Tyson, Alyssa (Travis), Amanda (Tyrell), Chase, Chloe, Matthew, Jonathan, and great-grandson Jamie. He is also survived by his sister Marjorie and brothers Harold, Lloyd and Merle, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Vern’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society. His family is grateful for the outpouring of sympathy and support from all who loved him.
