Born in Virginia, Juanita later moved to California with her beloved husband, Norman Handy, before they eventually settled in Canada, where they shared a wonderful life together.
Together, Norm and Nita shared a life deeply rooted in faith. They founded a local church, supported missionaries and ministries both locally and globally, and taught Sunday School. Juanita gave her time and gifts faithfully to the communities she was a part of. She was humble, gentle, loving, and faithful until the end.
She is survived by her three devoted children: Virginia Thiele and her husband Dan; John Handy and his wife Corinne; and Susan Welch and her husband John. As a grandmother, Juanita was deeply loved by her grandchildren—Christina, Anna, Amy, Fino, Megan, Michael, Lucas, Camille, Jennifer, Kaitlynn, Kendrick, and Emily—and was blessed with twelve cherished great-grandchildren—Madeline Juanita, Juliana, Nina, Henry, Max, Jesse, Parker Norman, Riley, Cici, Lev, Kalea, and Ethan—who brought her endless delight.
Beyond her family, Nita was affectionately known as “Grandma Handy” to many in her community. Her warmth, generosity, and zest for life left an indelible mark, and her passion for quilting, walking, and cycling connected her with others and brought her joy throughout her life. A dedicated and compassionate school teacher, she shared the gift of learning enthusiastically, fostering a love of knowledge in all who had the fortune to learn from her.
In memory of Juanita, and only if you are able, the family kindly requests donations in lieu of flowers to be made to the Gateway of Hope in Langley, an organization near to her heart and a place where she found an unexpected, welcoming community.
