At age 102, Mary Ellen “Spec” Reed passed away on May 31st, 2021. She was born in 1919 in Lancaster, Ohio where she was a life-long resident. In 1944, she married Harold W. Reed who preceded her in death in 1990. She was the daughter of Bert and Mary Mowry. Her parents and six siblings (Virginia Hazelton, Patty Orr, Dave Mowry, Beth Miller, Margaret Cable, Betty Contosta) preceded her in death. She is survived by her son, Jim (Karen) Reed of Baltimore and daughter, Jinx Bailey of Chelsea, Michigan. Affectionally known as “Noni” to her grandsons, Aaron Reed, Tim Bailey and David Bailey and granddaughter Lori Buchwalter, and great grandchildren, Kyle and Ryan Buchwalter, Drew and Ethan Reed and Peter, Chase and Ruth Bailey.
She loved her family and friends and enjoyed entertaining and cooking for them. She was a gracious host and her home was always relaxing and comfortable.
The Reed’s owned and operated Reed’s Cut Rate (from 1939 to 1967) on Washington Avenue and Total Discount (from 1963 to 1981) on Main Street and other stores were located in Ashville and New Holland.
She was a life-long member of The First Presbyterian Church. For many years, she volunteered by working in the church bookstore, ironing church robes, visiting friends and relatives in nursing home and sharing her baked goods. She also volunteered at North (Mt. Pleasant) Elementary and South School for many years. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Sherman House, in the Library Garrett and teaching literacy. She helped to start the Lioness organization, was a Cub Scout Den Mother, and was a member of Twig 5, Friends of the Library, Fairfield Heritage Society and played in several bridge clubs. She and her husband enjoyed golf, travel, bridge parties and attending OSU football games. She loved reading, baking, gardening, entertaining and needlework.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 4th, 2021 at 11AM at The First Presbyterian Church (222 N. Broad St. Lancaster, OH 43130) with Pastor Nathan Loudon officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Sherman House.
