Charlene met her future husband, Bobby Joe “Joe” Chapman when she was six years old, and he attended her school for a short time due to the Flood of 1937. She graduated in 1948 from Point Pleasant High School, where she was one of the first majorettes. When they met again in high school they became sweethearts and were married on September 16, 1950.
In her career, Charlene raised 5 children, was an operator for the phone company in Point Pleasant, an Administrative Assistant to the President at Ameritrust Bank in Canton, Ohio and a receptionist for Paul B Haynes, DDS, Lancaster, Ohio. She and Joe loved to camp and travel together. They started out camping in a tent (with 5 children and a dog) followed by a pop up camper then upgraded to motorhomes.
Charlene was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lancaster, where she volunteered at the First Community Kitchen serving meals. She also helped organize the funeral meals for the church and was a member of the Esther-Rebecca Circle for many years. She loved to make candy buckeyes which everyone enjoyed so much.
Charlene is survived by 5 children: Jay of North Canton, OH, Marsha (Dan) Shetler of Simpsonville, SC, Greg (Kristi) of Villa Rica, GA, Edana (J. Dale) Curtis of Greensboro, NC and Beth of Pickerington, OH; brother Ronald “Burr” Burgess of Lakeland, FL; sisters Ruth Tucker of Lexington, NC, Sharon “Tudy” (Donnie) Click of Point Pleasant, WV, Cheryl “Sissy” (Don) Shinn of Barboursville, WV and Beverly (Allan) Lee of Gallipolis Ferry, WV. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition, she is survived by her beloved canine companion, Mia, and her rescue cat, Mr. Kitty.
Charlene is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, her parents Thornton and Clara (Bradshaw) Burgess, 2 year old brother Larry Burgess and sister Dorcus (“Chink”) Riffle of Martins Ferry, OH.
Calling hours will be held at Halteman-Fett-Dyer Funeral Home, Lancaster, on Friday, December 9 from 5:00-7:00pm and Saturday December 10 from 9:00-10:00am with funeral services at 10:00am. Rev. Dr. Brian Jones of First United Methodist Church will be officiating. A graveside service will follow at 2:00pm at Kirkland Memorial Gardens, Point Pleasant, WV.
The family of Charlene would like to give a special thank you to Linda at the Pickering House for her wonderful, healing meals, and to Chaplain Sue at the Pickering House for her visits and prayer with mom.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church, 163 E. Wheeling Street and FairHoPe Hospice, 282 Sells Road, both in Lancaster, Ohio.
