Joan Lorraine Costigan

Joan Lorraine Costigan, age 87, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2020. She was born in Staten Island, NY to Thomas and Ann Mitchell. Joan was married to Charles John Gerhard (who preceded her in death) for 38 years and they had 4 children. She married John Vincent Costigan, also from Staten Island, in 1993. They met at St. Vincent’s Medical Center where they were both employed for many years.

Joan was a dedicated homemaker who enjoyed cooking and baking. She loved to entertain and have a house full of family and friends for the Holidays. Joan also enjoyed ceramic classes, classic movies, listening to music, singing nursery rhymes to the children, the occasional glass of wine and dinner out with her friends. On several occasions, she offered her home and care to family members who were down on their luck. She also provided meals for the friends of her children, who were less fortunate. Throughout the past year, as she suffered with several medical issues, Joan always had a good sense of humor, a witty personality and sincere love for her family. Everyone loved being around Joan, she always made you feel welcomed and loved.

Joan is survived by her husband John Costigan, son Charles Gerhard and wife Elizabeth Gerhard; son John Gerhard and wife Theresa Gerhard; daughter Janet Voorhees and husband Fletcher Voorhees. Her son James Richard Gerhard predeceased her in 2016.

Joan treasured her 4 children, 9 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren! She always put others before herself. She was a loving wife, daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, Godmother, sister-in-law, and friend to all who loved her. Joan’s compassion, caring, personality, sincerity and overabundance of love will be deeply missed by all who touched her life.
