Born on August 29, 1962, in Bourne, Massachusetts, Steve was one of seven sons of Stephen and Mary Patricia Hamer. Known to his brothers as Steph, they experienced a childhood rich in travel and adventure, moving frequently due to his father’s service in the Air Force. He graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School in Colorado Springs and went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. There he met and fell in love with Carol, his wife of 40 years. The couple married in 1984, the summer after Steve graduated.
The two built a beautiful family of eight wonderful children. The family continued to grow as Steve and Carol welcomed six sons and daughters in-law and seven amazing grandchildren. Steve was always busy supporting his family, displaying the true meaning of “labor of love”. Whether working on cars or landscaping the backyard, Steve enjoyed working with his hands. He shared that interest with his children, teaching them to be Renaissance men and women, people who could do anything…just like him! He loved cooking holiday meals, and hosting backyard parties where he was always found at the grill. He was a master of many subjects and would engage in endless hours of conversation sharing his appreciation for art, music, and craftsmanship.
Steve worked many jobs in entertainment and construction before dedicating a career to software quality assurance, contributing his expertise to several companies, most recently with the Pulte Group. Known for his keen eye for detail and unwavering work ethic, he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues wherever he went.
Steve is survived by his devoted wife, Carol; his children, Kristin, Michael (Erica), Andrew (Corinne), David (Brynne), Elizabeth, Erin (Jeff), Sara (Cody), and Patrick; and his cherished grandchildren, Audrey, Jake, Andi, Nathan, Elijah, Abby, and Nora. He is also remembered by his brothers and their wives, Tim and Sherry, Kevin and Sharon, Brian and Noelia, Pete and Jen, and Ken and Cindy, his many nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of extended family and friends. He is preceded by his parents Steve and Patty, his brother Danny, and son-in law Roy.
Steve’s warmth, kindness, and sense of humor will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2024 from 3-5 pm at Advantage Runyan Stevenson Mortuary in Lakewood, Colorado. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, October 18, 2024 at 11:00 am at St. Jude Catholic Church in Lakewood with a reception to follow, also at St. Jude.
