After attending South High School, he enlisted in the Navy in 1942 at age 17. He served his country in the Pacific Theater as a tail gunner, radio operator and bombardier in carrier-based aircraft. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and five Air Medals for his combat service.
After WWII he married Imogene Gladys Bell and attended the Denver University School of Business, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. After graduation, he founded Columbine Construction Company which he owned and operated for 30 years. He developed a stellar reputation in Denver's construction industry for his building projects, including housing subdivisions, apartments, office buildings, and retail structures. He often took ownership positions in his projects. Additionally, he served on the board of Homestead House Furniture, Inc.
Don was known by family and friends for his love of camping, fishing, and hiking in the Colorado mountains and Utah desert. He pioneered river rafting before the sport became popular, and piloted his own rafts down numerous wild rivers in Colorado, Utah, and Idaho. He was an ardent supporter of conservation causes and an excellent outdoor photographer, with a keen sense of composition and lighting. He remained physically fit and active until his death.
He is survived by his wife, Alison (Kirk) McNabb, his four children, Scott, Kerry, John and Andrew McNabb, and four grandchildren; Karen Kalahar, and Katherine, Aiden and James McNabb.
His parents and his sister, Ruth Vorhees, preceded him in death.
Public Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 from 1-5:00 p.m. at Runyan-Stevenson-Trevino Chapel, 6425 West Alameda Ave., Lakewood, CO 80226 (303-233-3333). Formal services will be held at the Chapel at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 19 followed by interment with military honors at 11:15 a.m. at Ft. Logan National Cemetery.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to The Nature Conservancy or the National Federation for the Blind.
