Kelley Smith

Kelley Smith, a beacon of light and love, was born on August 5th, 1950, in Pasadena, TX, to May and Frank Smith. The youngest of three siblings, he navigated life with his quick wit, a spirit full of joy, and an undeniable competitive streak.

Kelley's journey began as a proud Galena Park Yellow Jacket, a graduate of Galena Park High School's Class of 1968. Sports ran in his blood; he was a fierce competitor, excelling in football, basketball and baseball. A defining moment in his baseball career came with a game-changing walk-off home run, securing a Yellow Jacket victory. This became a cherished memory, one that his grandchildren loved to hear and will proudly carry forward. His passion for baseball was evident from the start, leading him to the baseball fields of San Jacinto Junior College and Sam Houston State University.

A chapter of service and honor awaited Kelley as he answered the call to serve in the U.S. Army from 1972 to 1974. Stationed at Fort Ritchie, Maryland, he exemplified courage, dedication, and a healthy dose of humor, qualities that would resonate throughout his life.

In Linda, affectionately known as "Lu," Kelley found his soulmate, and on February 8th, 1975, they embarked on a beautiful journey of love and partnership. Their union was blessed by two remarkable boys, Josh and Chase, who brought unending joy into Kelley's life. His devotion extended beyond their home, as he wholeheartedly coached little league for an impressive 16 years. He not only instilled in them a deep love for the game but also imparted lessons in sportsmanship and camaraderie. As a father, Kelley was an unwavering pillar of strength, a constant presence through life's twists and turns, and a guide, always leading with faith and a heart full of boundless love.

Kelley's legacy expanded with the addition of four adored grandchildren, Leighton, Raegan, Eli, and Gemma. Embracing his next cherished role as "Poppa," he brought them infinite smiles, stories and songs, contagious laughter, and a comforting lap for snuggles. To his grandchildren, he was a tough exterior with a tender-hearted interior, always ready to go to great lengths for his family.

Professionally, Kelley was an integral part of Baker Hughes from 1980 until his well-deserved retirement in 2013. His infectious humor, vivacious spirit, and unquestionable charm were not only instrumental in his success as an Oilfield Salesman but also left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to work alongside him.

In his retirement, Kelley relished the simple pleasures of life—golfing, men's Bible study, building on his wine expertise and the wonderful camaraderie of his High Meadow Ranch community. He was a steadfast supporter of his children and grandchildren, in every pursuit, whether grand or small.

Kelley's journey was one of love, service, and unwavering commitment to his family and friends. In the tapestry of life, Kelley's thread will forever be woven, a testament to a life well-lived and a heart that touched countless others. May his memory continue to inspire us to live with love, and an unyielding passion for the things that truly matter.

Kelley Smith is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Linda; son Josh and daughter-in-law Kristyna; son Chase and daughter-in-law Tia; grandchildren, Leighton, Raegan, Eli, and Gemma; brother Rodney and wife Lynda; brother Frankie; mother-in-law Veda Jackson; sister-in-law Ann Phillips; sister-in-law and brother-in-law La Dell and Bill O’Guin; numerous nieces and nephews; and a wide circle of family and friends who were blessed to know him.

Kelley is preceded in death by his beloved parents, May and Frank Smith, as well as his cherished nephew, Shell Scott Smith. We are at peace knowing they awaited him in a joyful reunion at the gates of heaven.

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to his Caregiver, John Laverde from ComForCare and Lorena Buehler with Suncrest Hospice that tended to Kelley with great care and kindness in his final days and their wonderful community of friends and family, who have covered them with love and prayer throughout his courageous battle with cancer.

A celebration of Kelley's life will take place on September 15th at 2pm in the Chapel at Second Baptist Church – Woodway Campus, 6400 Woodway Dr., Houston, TX 77057. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in Kelley's memory.

2 Timothy 4:7-8: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for His appearing."
