Gustav A. (Steve) Heyer passed away on Saturday March 12, 2016 while vacationing in Sydney, Australia. Steve was born August 30, 1941 in Berlin, Germany. Not long after he was born, the Heyer family relocated to a small town outside of Munich, where he spent most of his childhood.
At the age of 16, Steve immigrated with his family to the United States and settled in Chandler, AZ. Steve attended the University of Nevada where he completed the Army ROTC program. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army (Infantry Branch). His service career spanned more than 20 years and included two combat tours in Vietnam, as well as assignments in the US as an Infantry Company Commander and as a Battalion Executive Officer. Later in his military career he served on the staff of the Commander in Chief, US Army Europe, as well as an International Logistics Officer in the Office of the Secretary of Defense in the Pentagon, Washington, D.C.
Following his retirement from the US Army in 1985, Steve used his native fluency in German to teach German, History, and Philosophy at the Atlanta International School in Atlanta, GA. After his teaching career, Steve generously supported his former students with personal advice and career counseling. Steve also remained active in his communities working with nonprofit and social organizations, including membership in Kiwanis of Greensboro, NC.
Steve is remembered for his great sense of humor by family, friends and associates. He often remarked, "The last words spoken by any organization will be 'We have never done it that way before.'" He will also be remembered for the constant love, support and guidance he provided to all of his family, friends, and community. He was a man who always made himself available help those around him.
He is survived by his beloved wife Linda P. Brady of Greensboro, NC, his sister Michaela Lind of San Antonio, TX, his two sons Stephen and Michael of Austin, TX and his grandchildren Alyx, Megan, and Andrew
Steve's impact and love spread over many different countries across the globe. He will be sorely missed by many around the world who had the extraordinary privilege of experiencing his bright smile, witty personality, and huge heart.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday April 2, 2016 at 11:00 am at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 411 Ranch Road 620 South Lakeway, TX 78734.
