He leaves a vast emptiness in the hearts of his family and friends who will deeply miss his tremendous loyalty to family, hardworking spirit, quick wit and sense of humor.
Doug knew his blessings were great: loving parents, wife and in-laws; a special brotherly bond; adoring children; supportive extended family and kind friends. Beyond these earthly treasures, Doug recognized the greatest gift of all – the recognition and love from his heavenly Father.
Known for his interest in news and politics, Doug was also fascinated with intelligent design and in recent years embraced how science supports not only the existence of an intelligent designer but God himself.
His spiritual journey brought him to accept and surrender to Jesus Christ and to the realization that our purpose in life is to love Him and love others. He experienced several profound encounters with the Holy Spirit that uplifted his mind, heart and soul, as well as those close to him.
Doug was born on August 23, 1964, in Beech Grove, Indiana. Through a series of family moves, he also lived in Tennessee, Illinois and Nebraska before settling in Texas and eventually in Houston where he attended Fondren Junior High School and Westbury High School. He was a standout baseball player, pitching for most of his school years and later attending St. Edward’s University on a baseball scholarship, where he earned a bachelor of science in business administration and met his future wife, Michelle. After graduation, Doug followed Michelle to the Washington DC area, working in banking and title insurance for a few years before joining the family business, Bevenco Inc., an equipment leasing and capital financing company in Houston. He helped lead the business through good times and challenging times over the next 31 years. Always the gifted conversationalist, Doug enjoyed talking with business associates and clients alike about a myriad of subjects, from world affairs to nuclear energy.
Upon returning to Texas, Doug and Michelle married and built their first home together in Sugar Land where they resided for 15 years and welcomed their two biggest blessings – Maddie and Carson. In 2007, they realized their dream of moving to their beloved Hill Country to raise their children among the hills and lakes. Doug was a devoted father who loved to coach, water ski on Lake Travis, snow ski with his kids, work in the yard and clean the family cars – any excuse to be outside.
Moving to Austin also opened the wonderful opportunity to welcome his brother Ted into the family business. The two worked side by side these last 14 years. Doug cherished this time and both families enjoyed the closeness of sharing life in the same community with their kids attending the same schools.
He is survived by wife, Michelle Lynn (Huff) Beck, married 30 years, and their children Madeline (Maddie) Grace Beck who inherited his levelheadedness, logical problem solving and love of music, and Carson Louis Beck who acquired his humor, practicality and handyman qualities; his father Donald (Don) Anthony Beck and mother Kathleen (Kay) Ann Beck; and brother Theodore (Ted) Joseph Beck and wife Jessica (Jessi) Beck, nephew Travis Jordan Beck and niece Janina (Jana) Kaya Beck.
A Celebration of Life will take place at 10:00 am on Saturday, December 18, at Austin Christian Fellowship, 6401 River Place Blvd, Austin, Texas 78730. All are welcomed to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests, with gratitude, that you choose the contribution that touches your heart: carry out an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness in Doug’s name, send a donation to Sarcoma Foundation of America http://ww.curesarcoma.org, and/or read “Imagine Heaven” by John Burke. This book helped to transform Doug’s thinking about eternity and our loving savior, Jesus Christ.
Condolences may be sent to the Beck Family in care of Weed-Corley-Fish at https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/lakeway-tx/douglas-beck-10433115.
