Joseph A. Sorrentino passed away peacefully on April 18, 2017 at the age of 95. Born March 21, 1922 in St. Louis, Missouri to Emilia and Anthony, beloved husband of Irene for 65 years, loving father of Mark, Diane (Michael) and Gregg (Diane), cherished grandfather of Alana and Brian, devoted brother of Frank (Terry) and the late Al (Geri), uncle of Janet (Michael), Tony (Jodee), Kathy (Brian), Debbie (late Humberto), Cheryl and Joyce (Jim), and cousin of many loving families. Joseph’s family is eternally grateful for the loving devotion of his caregiver, Beverly and her family, and the compassionate services of the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center Home Healthcare Team. After graduation from high school, Joseph’s family moved to Chicago. In 1942, During WWII, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, 8th Cavalry, at Camp Grant, Illinois. In 1943 he was deployed overseas and served as a Medical Aidman in New Guinea, the Southern Philippines, Admiralty Islands and Luzon until 1945, when he was wounded and disabled. He received numerous outstanding service awards, including the Purple Heart and the Silver Star for bravery above and beyond the call of duty, therein receiving honorable discharge. In 1949 he met Irene while they were employed at Janette Electric Mfg. and they married in 1952. In 1954 he graduated from Northwestern University Business School and resumed his career at Chicago Aerial Industries (now Recon Optical) retiring as Vice President in 1987 at age 65. After working hard and raising three children, Irene and Joseph found a part-time home in West Palm Beach, FL until 2004 when they moved to Florida permanently. They enjoyed golfing and spending time with family and friends. He was a humble and generous man and will be missed by many. Memorial services will be a 10:30am mass on Friday, June 2, 2017 at St. Andrews Catholic Church, 2100 SE Cove Road, Stuart Florida, and a Military Honor Guard Service following at 1:30pm at the South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 State Road 7, Lake Worth, FL 33449. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joseph’s name to the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center at www.westpalmbeach.va.gov
