George Joseph "Snookum" Wolfe, of Cameron, passed away on Monday, July 8, 2024. He was born in Cameron on January 30, 1956 as the oldest of 6 children to George Alton and Barbara Ann Trahan Wolfe. Very few knew his real name because he was always called "Snookum", a nickname affectionately given to him by his paternal grandmother Eva. After Hurricane Audrey, his family moved to Lake Charles, where they resided until 1967. Upon returning back to Cameron in 1967, Snookum was very active in sports, under the direction of Coaches Warner Daigle and Robert Doxey.
He was of the Baptist Faith and a member of First Baptist Church of Cameron. He knew who his savior was, and his name was Jesus Christ.
Growing up the outdoors activities of hunting, fishing, breaking/riding horses, and working cattle were a part of his daily life. However, water was in his blood, becoming first a deckhand to his dad on the tugboat, Norma B of Rogers Boat Rentals. Although he enjoyed driving dump trucks and eighteen wheelers. He loved the water so much that he later became a Tugboat Captain, first on the Alma R and the West Cameron for Cameron Construction, and the DelGene for Crain Brothers, Inc, the motor vessel he captained when he retired from the water after 40+ years. Like his father and grandfather before him, he knew the waterways like the back of his hand, he could navigate anyone through just about any waterway throughout Southern Louisiana and Southern Texas. Like most men in his family, Snookum has always appeared to have a tough outer shell, but he would always try to help out someone in need. He shared some things with his dad, his name-dry sense of humor-and temperament but that all changed when he met his match in July of 1981 when he became a father. His daughter reminded him on a daily basis that she was a younger female version of himself. He liked to joke around and will be remembered for his "hyena like" laugh and his holiday turkey frying with sister-in-law Susie, brother Carl Wayne, and nephew Robbie Dean. Pre-Rita he would travel to Broussard Beach looking for drift wood for his wife’s numerous craft projects, which elated him. When he was not on the water, he enjoyed fishing and riding motorcycles with his wife and spending time with his great niece Bree Nicole and babysitting his great niece Ivy Ann. He enjoyed cutting grass for neighbors and being outdoors with his dogs Daisey, Josie, Daisey II, Beau, & Cami Jo. Snookum was gifted with playing music by ear, he enjoyed playing the organ and guitar with family and friends over the years. When he was stuck indoors, which was not by choice, he enjoyed watching John Wayne movies.
Surviving loved ones are, his wife of over 47 1/2 years, Sybil Saltzman Wolfe and daughter Tina Lynn; His shadows, Bree Nicole, Ivy Ann, and Cami Jo; Mother, Barbara Trahan Wolfe. Sister, Cindy Wolfe; Brothers, Lane Wolfe(Bonnie) and Carl Wolfe(Simone). Nephews, Robbie LaFosse(Stacy), Joe Wolfe(Jamie), Kirk Peshoff(Tammy), Mike Venable(Callie), Robert, Brian, Brent, and Brad Saltzman(Stacy); Nieces, Sabrinia Wolfe Conner(T-Mike), Allison Curtis Ashworth(Garrett), Mica LeBoeuf(Jamey), Shelby Wolfe Fountain(Chris), Sherry Peshoff, Glenda Peshoff Jinks(Lenard), Renetta Peshoff Trahan(Marvin), Debbie Venable, Wanda Venable Rodriguez, Pat, JoAnn and Samantha Saltzman, and Melissa Saltzman Bertrand; Uncles, Jessie Nunez(Karen) and Rickey Wolfe(Gail); Aunts, Lois Gordon and Patty Trahan; Sister-in-Laws, Nelta Saltzman Peshoff, Susie Fawvor, Margaret Primeaux Wolfe Simon(Arny), and Doris LeCompte Saltzman. Brother-in-Law, L.J. Saltzman(Shirley); Son at heart, Glenn Benoit; Numerous cousins, great nieces and great nephews.
Loved ones that have gone before him are his dad George Alton Wolfe, Sister, Bridget Wolfe Curtis; Brother, Gregory Wolfe; His maternal grandparents, Archie Trahan and Jewel Rutherford Trahan; paternal grandparents, Joseph Alton and Eva Adaway Wolfe; Father-In-Law & Mother-in-Law, Nolan and Enola Abshire Saltzman.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2024 in the Chapel of Peace at J. E. Hixson Funeral Home in Lake Charles. Funeral service will begin at Noon on Thursday with Rev. Lloyd Carroll officiating. Burial will follow in Sweetlake/Grand Lake Cemetery.
