Louis “Louie” Dwight Powell, 80, of LaGrange, Kentucky passed away Friday, June 16, 2023, peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. Louie was born August 14, 1942, to the late Edgar and Ethel Powell.
On October 19, 1963, Louie married his best friend and the love of his life, Victoria “Vicky” Poole. They settled down in his hometown of LaGrange to raise two wonderful children, Allen and Robin. Louie found time to Own and Operate Louis Powell Excavating for 60 years, all while being a member of the LaGrange Fire and Rescue Department, serving as the Chief from 1975-1984, working for the Oldham County Sheriff Office as a Sheriff Deputy, and helping to develop the water system for the Oldham County Water District.
On a Friday night you might have found him at Oldham County High School watching his grandson Ryan play football, his granddaughter “Katie” cheer, or at a tractor pull cheering on his son Allen as the Case of Chaos, their pulling tractor, roared down the track.
Louie loved to quail hunt and loved his bird dogs. He spent many Sunday afternoons during hunting season in the fields with his dogs hunting for birds, and Thanksgiving Day always began with an early morning hunt with his sons and grandson. He loved to dance and enjoyed so much performing with and watching as his families clogged around the states. He actually loved to work and one of his favorite things was being on top of his bulldozer. In his later years you could always find him sitting on the back porch, riding around the property on his buggy, or enjoying his family at the family pool in the summer. Louie was honored to be named as one of Oldham County’s living treasures.
Louie’s love for our Lord shined bright in the way he loved people and lived his life. He was a lifelong member of Ballardsville Baptist Church where he served as deacon for many years and built great friendships. Louie assisted in the development and building of the church at the present location, which he was very proud of and loved being a part of.
His love for all his family and friends gained him many names over the years. Many called him Chief or Brother, then you could hear some yell out Uncle Louie or Lou Lou which all brought smiles to his face, but his favorite to hear was Daddy and Papa, which melted his heart every time he heard them calling him. He truly loved his babies so much!
Left to cherish the memory of Louie are his beloved wife of almost 60 years Vicky Powell; son Allen Powell (Amber); daughter, Robin Grattan (Tom); granddaughter, Shelby Lynn Knopp (Shawn); grandson, Ryan Grattan (Sarah); granddaughter, Katelyn Murphy (Mark); great-grandchildren, Lilah Beth Grattan, Michael, Jackson, and Danielle Knopp; as well as sister, Carolyn Rankin (Jimmy); brother, Kenny Powell (Patti); and many nieces, nephews, and a numerous amount of friends and extended family.
Preceding Louie are his parents, Edgar and Ethel Powell; brother, Sonny Powell (Joyce); and sisters, Libby Harvey (Pearl), Thelma Dempley (June), and Betty Simmons.
Visitation for Louie will be Wednesday, June 21, 2023, from 2-8pm at Heady-Radcliffe Funeral Home located at 706 W. Jefferson Street, LaGrange, Kentucky.
Service will be held at the old Ballardsville Baptist Church, more recent Salt and Light Baptist, 4901 Hwy 53 Crestwood, KY., on Thursday, June 22, 2023, at 1pm, with visiting from 11-to start of service at the church.
Burial will follow the service at Mt. Tabor Cemetery.
The family wishes in lieu of flowers, donations to be made to WHAS Crusade for Children, the great charity which Louie diligently worked for so many years as Chief of the Lagrange Fire and Rescue Department.
