He was born to the late John Hayden and Mary (Yount) Harrod on September 17, 1917 in Shelby County, KY.
Horace was a WWII Army Veteran serving in the European theater with the 28th Infantry as a communications Staff Sergeant. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for the KY Department of Transportation and as a Farmer. Horace loved baseball and was an avid University of Kentucky fan.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Charlotte (White) Harrod; daughter, Charlotte White Skaggs; parents, brothers, John Thomas, Robert Alfred, Richard, Burgett Sanford, Enoch Andrew, Luke and Barnett Celbert Harrod; and sisters, Mary Ann Mischler, Sallie Frances Chesher, Lillie Belle Brown, Minerva Mae Terrell, Madlyn Brooks and Helen Burnes Stratton.
Left to cherish the memory of Horace are his sons, Horace Rice Harrod Jr. (Barbara) and Anthony Kent Harrod (Donna); grandchildren, Justin Rice Harrod (Shawna), Jordan Clay Harrod (Tara) and Clay Rice; Great-grandchildren, Ethan Clay Harrod, Molly Ann Lehr, Hannah Sophia Harrod, Cooper Rice Harrod and Charlotte Palmer Harrod, extended family and many friends.
A celebration of Horace’s life will be held on Thursday, August 24, 2023 at 11am at Heady-Radcliffe Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 706 W Jefferson St, Lagrange, KY 40031 with burial to follow in Louisville Memorial Gardens East in Louisville, KY. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 4-8pm.
The Harrod Family would like to extend an abundance of gratitude to Tammy Roberts, Linda Schulten, Kris Schulenburg, Kathy Smith, Christina Waggner, Reesie Knox and Maria Pippenger, Tonya Knebel, Vangie Faith, Amy Nelson, Kim Smith, and Bonnie Meadows who took care of Horace for the last four years allowing him to stay healthy at home. We also want to recognize the entire staff of the geriatric group with the Veterans Administration who were also wonderful. Your care and love will always be cherished.
