Frederick William McCormick passed away peacefully at home on September 18th 2021 at the age of 90. Fred’s battle with dementia in recent years showed his courage in facing life‘s challenges with a smile and a positive attitude.
He is survived by his daughters Barbara (Daun), Diana (Jim), three granddaughters, Kristyna (Matt), Jennifer (Zach), Jessica (Tim) five great-grand children, brother Frank (Dorrie), sister-in-law‘s Patsy (Louis) Schmitt, Sandy (GW) Martin and many nieces and nephews.
Fred grew up in South San Francisco, and joined the Navy at the age of 17. He was honorably discharged in 1951, and went to work at Rohr aircraft factory where he met the love of his life, Alice Martin.
Fred and Alice were married on July 25, 1954 in Yuma Arizona. They were married for nearly 53 years until Alice’s passing in 2007. In 1959 they bought their home in Lemon Grove, and raised their three children Barbara, Fred Jr. and Diana. He worked at Castle Ramblers as a mechanic for many years before deciding to go to work for San Diego Transit. While working at San Diego transit he received awards for perfect attendance and employee of the year. He retired from San Diego transit in 1997.
Since retiring he was able to enjoy the 900 square-foot workshop that he built in his spare time, and where he built many beautiful things such as a bed, bench seat, hope chest, and wine bottle holders to name a few of his projects. He was considered a master craftsman by many due to his attention to detail.
He really enjoyed traveling. He and Alice took many trips to visit family in Arkansas and Kansas City, Missouri over the years. They also enjoyed going up to Julian, taking a weekend trip up to Big Bear or Catalina. He also took a road trip with his daughters to Solvang, Hearst Castle, Paso Robles, Morro Bay, and Las Vegas. Fred, Diana and Jim took trips to Cancun where they went jet skiing, sailing, snorkeling, tubing in caves and much more. He never said no to an adventure! The three of them also went on a cruise, and enjoyed a trip to Kauai where he went on a helicopter and had a blast!
Out of all of Fred‘s fun adventures there was one in particular that he enjoyed above all others, and that was when his daughter Diana surprised him for his birthday with a ride on a bi-plane. Matter of fact he loved it so much that he couldn’t wait to do it again and share this experience with his brother Frank.
His quick wit, easy smile and positive personality will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.
