Michael Lee Barnes

Michael Lee Barnes, a beloved father, veteran, and community leader, passed away peacefully at the age of 74 on September 30, 2024. Born on October 25, 1949, in Ames, Iowa, Michael's zest for life was evident from a young age, excelling in cross country during his time at Tech High School in Des Moines, graduating in 1967.

Following high school, Michael proudly served in the United States Army, where he developed a strong sense of duty and camaraderie that would define much of his life. After his service, he pursued his passion for design, earning a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Iowa State University. His education laid the foundation for a successful career, as he and his wife, Martha built beautiful homes in Rockport, Texas, that reflected both his artistic vision and his dedication to quality craftsmanship.

Michael’s love for the outdoors was a defining aspect of his life. He cherished fishing and hunting, often sharing these passions with family and friends. His appreciation for nature was matched only by his love for travel, particularly his fond visits back to Iowa, where he felt a deep connection to his roots.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Michael served as the commander of American Legion Post 363 in Rockport, Texas, where he was an integral part of the community. His leadership and commitment to honoring fellow veterans inspired many, and his legacy of service continues to resonate in the hearts of those he touched.

Michael is survived by his wife Martha, his children Tim Barnes (Kylie), Jennifer Farris (Allan), Merrin Chivers, Molly Rose-DeLeon (Cris), and Mattie Rose, his grandchildren Dylan, Brandon, Damian, Leeland, Savannah, Sophia, and Ellie, his siblings John Barnes (Gayle) Jeff Barnes (Kathy), Richard Barnes (Patti), Leslie Jean Demelge, and his sisters in law Nancy Buzza and Annette Wells, who will forever remember him for his warm spirit, sense of humor, and unwavering support. He leaves behind a legacy of love, adventure, and a dedication to making the world a better place. Michael is preceded by his parents Charles and Dorothy Bradish Barnes, his brother-in-law Michael Demelge, and his in-laws Keith Baker, Pat Baker, Bill Baker, and Paul Buzza

A celebration of Michael's life will be held on what would have been his 75th birthday, October 25, 2024 at American Legion Post 363, 1701 S. Church Street, Rockport, TX 78382, with the social hour at 2PM with military honors at 4PM.

Michael Lee Barnes will be deeply missed, but his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
