Robert “Bob” A. Overby, Jr. died peacefully at home on December 29th in Kokomo, Indiana at the age of 83. Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy (Callahan). He is survived by his brother, George Overby (Willie Mae) of Victoria, Virginia, and his three children, W. Nadia Cannon (Rick) and Robin Lynn Overby, both of Kokomo, Michael Overby, of Indianapolis, and grandchildren, Blake Overby, of Columbus, Ohio, and Asia Clayton, of Fort Wayne, James Maurice Clayton, of Marion, Alexa Cannon, of Indianapolis, and Donavan Byas and Devin Thomas, of Columbus, Ohio. Robert was born in Nottoway County, Virginia to Robert Overby, Sr. and Daisy Ivey. After working briefly for Ford Motor Car Company, Hudson Motor Car Company and the Virginia Railroad, Robert enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1952. After 20 years of serving the country, Robert worked at Haynes International and retired after 18 years.
He married Lucy, his hometown sweetheart, in 1957. Over the next 49 years, the couple welcomed three children into their home and Robert set about teaching them the value of hard work, and the importance of family and showing kindness to others. Robert had a love for aviation and was a recreational pilot for over 20 years. He received his prestigious FAA Airmen Certification and was recognized by the FAA for high standards in education, licensing and safety. He was an active and dedicated member of Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church and was a member of the Usher Board and the Transportation Ministry for over 30 years. A Homegoing Service will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, 1599 E. Sycamore Street, Kokomo, with visitation from 9:00-11:00 AM at the church. Entombment will follow the service at Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery, with military honors. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Robert's life. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial gifts to Mt.
