Barbara was born to Gayl Emerson Cooper and Ruth Haynes Cooper on December 22, 1921, in Kokomo, Indiana. She was born in a small house near the southwest corner of West Sycamore Street and North McCann Street.
She was the prom queen for the Kokomo High School class of 1939, and along with many of her friends, she enjoyed hanging out at the old Westside Pharmacy in Kokomo. Mom was a graduate of The College of William and Mary, where she earned a B.A. in Sociology in 1943. Later that year, in June, she married Ray Cameron. They were married at St. Andrew Episcopal church in Kokomo.
In 1964 Barbara completed her Master of Arts in Education degree and began teaching at Rockford West High School, Rockford, Illinois. In 1970, Barb and Ray relocated back to Kokomo, Indiana where Mom took a new position at Haworth High school, still teaching English. She retired from teaching in 1987, having taught for twenty-three years.
Barb was an avid reader and must have read thousands of books. She also was passionate about bridge up until two years before her death. She enjoyed swimming and playing golf, although she never bothered keeping score. After retirement, Mom volunteered at the American Cancer Society where she was President of the Daffodil Fund Drive for several years.
She leaves behind a son, B. Douglas Cameron (Fran) Marietta, Georgia, and one daughter, Mardi (Martha) Richardson (Mark) also of Marietta, Georgia. Also surviving are grandchildren, Denver Richardson (Courtney), Mark Richardson, Jr., Leslie Hinson, and great grandchildren Cameron and Ella Richardson.
Mom was always calm when the storms were raging. Her happiest times were the many family vacations and occasional trips to Florida and Europe.
She was the greatest Mom in the whole world. She was our Mom.
