Robert was a man of great character, a role model to far more than even he realized and he loved everyone. He was also a very generous man who never turned away from those in need and always willing to lend a helping hand. For those who knew and loved him Robert will never be forgotten.
Robert was born May 29, 1947 in Knoxville, TN. He was a member of Meridian Baptist Church where he also served as a deacon. Robert graduated from South High School in 1966 and went on to join the United States Navy where he faithfully served his country aboard the USS Bennington during Vietnam from 1966 to 1970. After his time in the service, he began his career at Lowe's Home Center working his way up to managing and opening numerous new stores in East TN and Southern KY before retiring after 25 years.
Robert was preceded in death by his mother, Lillian Pickens; step-father, James "Bud" Pickens; father, Allie Monroe and brothers: Doug Pickens and James "Jimmy" Pickens.
Robert is survived and deeply missed by his loving wife, Barbara of over 56 years and his daughters: Robin (David) Smith and Wendy (John) Branch. Forever cherished and remembered by his four grandchildren: Megan (Jared) Hall, Joshua Smith, Hannah Branch and Kayla Branch and his two great-grandchildren: Addison and Olivier. His memory will also be cherished by his brother, Lester (Wilma) Monroe. Robert's memory lives on with many brother and sisters-in-law; aunts; cousins; nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for the care, love and friendship of their hospice nurse, Niko.
The family will receive friends Sunday, February 12, 2023 between the hours of 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm at Meridian Baptist Church, 6513 Chapman Hwy, Knoxville, TN 37920 with a service to follow officiated by Rev. Dana Fachman. Family and friends will meet Monday, February 13, 2023 at Meridian Baptist Church Cemetery, Sevierville Pike, Knoxville, TN for a 1:00 pm Interment Service with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Meridian Baptist Church.
