LAVERNE GARRISON DYER – age 98 of the Karns Community, went home to be with her Lord on January 4, 2017. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Milton Dyer, Jr.; parents, Alvin and Sephie Garrison; sisters, Thelma Hickey and Mildred Hendrix; brother, Alvin Garrison along with many other friends and family. She was a descendant of the Garrison family, who were one of the earliest settlers of the Karns Community. She was saved as a young girl at Beaver Ridge United Methodist Church. She joined Grace Baptist Church after she was married and was the oldest member of Grace. She taught school throughout Knox County for 33 years. Her first school was a 2 room school at Carpenter Elementary where she taught first, second and third grades. She volunteered at Children’s Hospital and ministered to people wherever she was. She leaves two sons and their wives, James Kenneth and Bobbie Dyer and Kevin Milton and Teresa Dyer; four grandchildren, Christy Castleberry, Kent Dyer, Lindsay Dyer and Andrew Dyer; 6 great-grandchildren and many friends. A special thanks to the staff and residents of Autumn Care Assisted Living Facility where she spent much of the last two years. They cared for her and our family with the greatest of skill, love and compassion. The family will receive friends 1-3 pm Sunday at Weaver’s Chapel with the service to follow at 3 pm. Dr. Ron Stewart and Rev. Mark Braddom officiating. Family and friends will meet 1:45 pm Monday at Lynnhurst Cemetery for a 2 pm interment. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Grace Baptist Church GSM building fund or to Dollywood Foundation’s My People Fund.
