Johnny Paul Van Horn, Sr. Knoxville, our husband, dad, Papa and hero has traded this earthly life for his heavenly reward. Johnny was born on April 6, 1947, in Clovis, CA. While growing up in the San Joaquin Valley, Johnny enjoyed many adventures that young boys only read about. From an early age, he loved to hunt, fish and spend time outdoors. Johnny attended Tranquility Union High School, Class of 1965. There, he excelled in track and field, especially sprint races. He married his childhood sweetheart, Alice Hughes on October 8, 1965, they recently celebrated 59 years of love and life together. Their bond lives on today in a lifetime of memories.
Johnny proudly served his country in the Army, both at home and abroad. He was a soldier and a patriot, but, by far, the title he loved most was “Dad”. He was a wonderful father who filled his home with fun and laughter. He taught his children to work hard and never take for granted the simple blessings in life. He spent many evening hours playing catch or basketball.
Johnny’s faith was source of strength and community for him. He was a long-time member of Madera Pentecostal Church of God and recently, The Church of God UA of Knoxville. He served many pastors as a faithful board member. His help with special projects and wise counsel was treasured.
The bulk of Johnny’s career was spent in manufacturing. He was a Plant Supervisor at Georgia Pacific in Madera, California until his retirement in 2004.
Johnny is survived by his wife Alice, daughter Stephanie Wheeler and husband Doug, son Johnny Jr. and wife Jody, 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Betty Adams and Patricia Jones and husband Steve. Johnny was preceded in death by his father Arthur Smith, mother Bulah Smith and sister Judy Weber, and his father Wendall Van Horn.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, October 18 at 2:00 pm at New Grey Cemetery.
Johnny was loved by many and will be missed by all. He was a wonderful example of a life well-lived and a journey well-done!
